Andrew_L26
Hi all. So since I've got my car if has had this shake. It's gotten better and worse depending on road conditions. It is just the steering wheel shaking and it's only really at 70km/h now. I've replaced my tie rods which were absolutely rooted, put in all new front suspension/swaybar bushings and swapped wheels and tires around and still no luck. I have a feeling my brake rotors may be out of whack however when braking the shaking doesn't seem to get better or worse. Any ideas would be super helpful. I'm probably going to get both rotors machined as they're pretty bad currently. Thanks All! Andrew
Moderators PB260Z Posted January 8, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 8, 2016 (edited) Hi Andrew How are the front wheel bearings ? Have you had a wheel alignment done ? If that has been done, get someone to do "on-car" wheel balance. Cheers PB Edited January 8, 2016 by PB260Z
blu260z
Half the time its almost the same price to just get new rotors. Have you replaced the steering coupler bush ?
oldmates260z
A vibration at a certain speed is a out of balance issue. It must be in your rotating parts, most likely wheels/tyres. I doubt the rotors would be the issue. If you can get on car balancing would be best. Biggest issue I have found is getting a mob that is good enough to do a balance at all gav240z
Riceburner
I would've thought warped brake rotors would only give vibration while braking lightly? I'd try rotating the wheels front to back and see if it changes, if it does you may have thrown a wheel weight and need them re balanced. Andrew_L26
Hi all, I actually took my rotors off today and hopefully I'll be taking them to my brake shop who said they would resurface them for around 40$ for both. I'm also going to get the calipers looked at while I'm there. I did replace the steering coupler bush and I doubt it would be my wheel alignment as it was happening before I replaced my tie rods and replacing them has put my alignment way out and I've roughly got it right. My wheel bearings seem fine, the rotors had no play and they look and feel fine (Amongst the grease) I don't think it is my wheel balance as I've actually changed wheels and the shake followed. I might try putting the stockies on front and see if that changes anything though it was happening with them on before. I haven't actually had my wheel alignment professionally done so I might just do that and ask them about it. Perhaps they would be able to sort it all out. Thanks eveyone EDIT** I think an on-car wheel balance may be the next thing to be done. Even if that isn't the issue the people running the tests may be able to direct me where to go from there. Moderators PB260Z Posted January 8, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 8, 2016 Hi Andrew On car balancing spins the wheel, tyre & rotor whilst still on the car. This youtube vid shows it. A good specialist wheel alignment shop should be able to help with both the alignment and balance. Cheers PB Andrew_L26
alanwil
I had a similar issue. Wheel bearings weren't quite adjusted up properly. Worth a look before going to more extremes.
Administrators gav240z Posted February 21, 2016 Administrators Share Posted February 21, 2016 I had my wheel balance done by a local tyre shop, who also chipped the paint on my RX-7. Useless wankers. So I took it to another shop that specialised in RX-7's and he redid the wheel balance and fixed the issue (mostly, there is still a slight vibration I get around 80 km/h that goes away at 90-100). I'd suggest taking it to another shop that does a proper job.
Andrew_L26
I'm taking her for a wheel alignment at an older fashioned shop, they are also going to do a static wheel balance and see if that fixes it. Also alanwil, when I had the rotors off I did re-adjust the wheel bearings to the spec listed in the factory service manual however I will look into it more. I've also noticed that the steering shakes like crazy under braking. I do however think that my 3.5cm of toe in may be the cause of some of my issues xD
Cozza
I do however think that my 3.5cm of toe in may be the cause of some of my issues xD Yeah I'd think so. 35mm is a lot. It would be horrible to drive. Andrew_L26
Moderators PB260Z Posted February 21, 2016 Moderators Share Posted February 21, 2016 Agree with Cozza, 35mm of toe in would not be helping. The steering wheel shaking like crazy under braking makes me think there is more wrong than just alignment issues. The alignment shop should be able to tell you exactly what is wrong and whatbis needed to fix it. It will be interesting to see what they advise Cheers PB Andrew_L26
Andrew_L26
Well the problem has been fixed!!!! My shop (Princi Motors) did a fantastic job, they replaced my inner tie rod boots, did a wheel alignment, re-adjusted the front wheel bearings and the car is absolutely beautiful to drive. Still has a fair bit of bumpstear but I think that is just a characteristic of the times. I'm really happy with it all. Seems like it was a combination of a terrible wheel alignment and poorly adjusted wheel bearings (I thought I did a good job but apparently not) oldmates260z
Moderators PB260Z Posted February 22, 2016 Moderators Share Posted February 22, 2016 Gidday Glad you got it sorted, and that it is was nothing major. Great result Cheers PB
Andrew_L26
Yeah, they did a good job with the wheel alignment however I've just realised that my two front wheels have been pretty badly knocked up by them taking them off and putting them back on. They were in near perfect condition except for a tiny bit of gutter rash on one of them What do you think? They are chipped like this on each side of the lugnut on every lugnut of both front wheels as well as stacks of paint worn off the back. I took the car back this morning but apparently that's what happens when they get taken off and balanced "unfortunately the machine has to clamp down on the wheels" overall I'm really unhappy with the service and most likely won't be taking the car back there Andrew
Administrators gav240z Posted February 22, 2016 Administrators Share Posted February 22, 2016 I don't believe that, you should be able to balance wheels without damaging them badly. This is the problem with cowboys that run tyre shops. Andrew_L26
Andrew_L26
Yeah I'm pretty annoyed about it especially considering the amount of effort me and another member went to getting them down to Melbourne, now I have these annoying chips beside EVERY lugnut + some decent gutter rash looking scuffs. Perhaps I will be able to get some touch up paint, a few of them have actually spider webbed out and more paint is chipping off.
Moderators PB260Z Posted February 22, 2016 Moderators Share Posted February 22, 2016 Hi Man that sucks ! The chips around the lug nuts look to me like they were caused by not taking enough care when putting the rattle gun the nuts. The scratches on lips, yes the alignment jig clamps onto that part of the wheel, but if placed carefully and not over tightened should cause damage. In my opinion the problem is not enough care, or as Gav says "cowboys" If the shop is part of a chain, contact head office and lodge a written complaint. Unlikely they will do anything but can't hurt to try. I would also leave appropriate and polite reviews on various social media pages. pauly_adams
i cant help you with the wheels but do yourself a favor, replace your ball joints in the front and do not use wasp suspension ones, use roadsafe or genuine. mine was shaking at that exact speed, i done everything you done which fixed the prob temporarily, it then started to shake really violently under brakeing, need less to say the ball joint snapped clean out of the socket it scared the pants out of me. dat240z
That's rubbish by the workmanship of the wheel shop mate. I'd go back with your father for backup and say what has happened. You take the car to professional and should expect the car back in better condition than it was dropped off. I say take your Dad as a lot of dodge stores will try get one over young people. Trust me, been there - done that.

I took them back on my own and they are currently down at a wheel restoration shop. The garage has been really good about it and have organised to have them fully restored. I'll let you all know what happens with the wheels when I get them back. Andrew
