jeff43 Posted January 3, 2016 Share Posted January 3, 2016 (edited) Hi All, I have noticed it has been fairly quiet on the site over the Christmas/newyear period so I thought it was about time I posted my project up. I have owned this car since mid 2006 (nearly 10 years - seriously were did that go) and began work on it around Nov 2011. I have had a fair few 240/260 2 seaters in the past but this is the one that I chose to keep for the long term. I did have a total of 3 240's and 1 260 2 seater in the shed when my 2 daughters came on the scene. Reality kicked in pretty soon after the birth of my first daughter and the culling began ( you can't save them all). Being a 1970 240Z early build number with a matching number engine the choice was reasonably easy except for the slight ding in the front end. The interior is in pretty good condition with the seats having been redone by the previous owner. So the plan was to fix the crash damage and get it driving. Well one thing led to another and with my mate Vorn getting into a full on resto with his 240Z (see his build here - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/11151-vorns-920-gold-240z/ ) I was slowly but surely heading down the path of a full resto. Nov 2011 I began in earnest by stripping the car down to a bare shell, geez thay come apart fast, pity they take so long to put back together. Stay tuned for the next instalment. Don't forget the first startup video... The race is on George, I am relying on your soon to be newborn slowing you up a tad. I am pretty confident I have decided on the colour. However I do not want to declare the colour until I have actually bought it and sprayed some panels, until then options are still open. Let's just say it is not an original colour but I believe it will look pretty much period correct i.e. it is a solid colour not metallic. It can definetely be fixed, in fact it has been fixed but we will get to that in a future update. This car was sold locally to me not long before I got it from a damaged auction. I have spoken with the previous owner and he told me he sold it to a young guy who had plans for an RB25DET etc, when he checked the odometer he reckoned it had done barely 150 miles since he sold it. It appears that the young guy struggled with the power of an L24 so maybe the RB25DET may have been a litttle to much. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

jeff43 Posted January 6, 2016 Author Share Posted January 6, 2016 So once the shell was stripped we get a better look at the extent of the front left damage By this stage I had manage to source a donor shell HS30-00288 (thanks Mossy) to provide the left front corner from the firewall to the RH side of the radiator support where it joins the RH front inner guard. Getting the radiator support panel out of my car was challenging due to the damage but I got there. LH inner guard was then removed from the firewall Then the complete LH inner guard and radiator support from Mossy's old shell was removed and temp fitted to check for fitment onto my shell Starting to look better already. I wasn't happy with the radiator support panel as it had had a hit a some stage in a previous life and needed a few rust repairs as well. As luck would have it I managed to source this piece of Datsun "UNOBTAINIUM" from a gentleman on this site. So I got to work and drilled out the spot welds to remove the old radiator support panel and fitted the new rust free one in it's place. The best thing is that your old shell is going to be saved by a guy from Vic that bought it from me. That shell sure has done some kms on a trailer. So from here on you will see a lot of KBS rust seal used. It might look like an ad for KBS, but the truth is I researched it, tried it and I liked it and seem to now want to use it almost everywhere. For the diyer I recommend brushing it on and with a bit of practice and learning to get the consistency right you can get a pretty good finish. I will be painting the engine bay in body colour but the underside and wheel arches will be staying as they are. I have done 2 coats on the underside of the car, the whole front end, the wiper box inside and out, drivers door all except the outer skin with 2L @ 77 dollars per Litre. I reckon that is pretty cheap considering the protection it provides. It can be painted over with any paint system as well. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ive been using it for all my rust repairs Ive been doing, Ive used a proper paint gun style strainer when pouring the paint into a clear jar, brand new paint brushes every time i paint ( 1.50 from bunnings) and yet i still get raised areas and dust particles and particulates settling in my paint as it cures. drives me mad!Rudi. Rudi. Hi Rudi, It is hard to put a number of hours on the repair. I have been at this car for 4 years now. In the earlier years I was slowed down by these 2 ratbags In the last year or so I have been able to get a lot more done as the girls are getting a lot more self sufficient. The pics make the KBS finish look better than it really is, overall I am happy with the results. I have had more trouble with air bubbles (might look like dust) in the finish, I have found if the paint is a little to thick or you apply it too thick you will get air bubbles that cannot escape. I have had better results when I have used a little bit of the thinners to thin it a little more and it only takes a dash of thinners. I also have found a better brush (3-4 dollars) gives a better finish and I clean them up with some prep wash thinners and reuse as well. I had read of people having trouble spraying KBS rust seal, I would love to see some pics.
