Paul Vercoe
Hi JWalker, I am after a 280Z tachometer for my 240Z - it now has electronic ignition so has to be changed over. Would you be able to sell me the tachometer separately and if so provide a price and photo. Many thanks, PaulV
Moderators PB260Z Posted September 12, 2015 Moderators Share Posted September 12, 2015 (edited) Hey, Paul, slight hijack. Are you the same Paul Vercoe that appeared on Aus Idol and worked for Fowles Auctions years back ? Cheers PB PS 280ZX Tacho is very different to 240/260Z unit. Paul Vercoe
No - not even close to that PV. My background is Defence (Army). I am going on advice from Datsun Parts LLC when I purchased an Electronic Distributor from them a year or so back. It reads in part: "A stock tachometer will not work with this setup because its inductive pickup isn't compatible with the signal from the E12-80. There are two solutions - replace it with a 75-78 280Z tachometer and connect the tachometer sensor lug to the terminal on the E12-80 module. If it still doesn't work buy a Autometer #3990 black face tachometer". http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.TRS0&_nkw=Autometer+%233990+black+face+tachometer&_sacat=0 Perhaps they are talking about a US spec 280Z, and not what we have here? I will go back to them for further advice. Many thanks, Paul
Moderators PB260Z Posted September 14, 2015 Moderators Share Posted September 14, 2015 (edited) Hi Paul, I was researching for my L28E & and Dissy swap into my my 260Z and came acrodd this thread. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/3593-fitting-280zx-distributor-in-a-240z/ - It suggests that the tacho will work. I am not at that stage as yet but will be giving it ago. There seems to two schools of thought around the compatibility between the E12-80 and standard 260Z tachometer. Anyone out threre who can confirm ? Cheers PB Apparantly the PV I knew years ago is now Zen Yoga instrctor. Paul Vercoe
Thanks for that Peter, I will follow this topic with interest. I received an email back from the supplier - Autometer is the best option. They will fit inside the stock 240Z bezel, you just need to dissemble the trim ring and it slips right inside the factory case. Any autometer 5" tachometer will work. GongZ
I bought a US 280Z tach from eBay so that I can swap it into a 240Z housing as shown in this discussion - http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/44301-tachometer-swap-280z-into-a-240z-series-1-housing/ (NB - I have not done the swap yet) There is also this topic about using a 280ZX tach in a 240Z housing - http://www.thezgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1289
