Hi Guys,

So I have been wondering this for a while now, my car HS30 00150 doesn't have the 2400 CC valve cover, but I've noticed other early AU delivered 240z's do. Unfortunately good reference photos are hard to find.

#84 did have the cover.

The best photo I have of #151 and I really can't tell...

Lurch's car #149 doesn't have it. But it could well have been changed, since a lot was changed on the engine.

So I'm wondering does anyone with an early 240z in the build range over 100 have this cover on their engine?

If you look at the lettering on 151 in relation to the threaded hole in the cover, you can tell its not the 2400OHC cover

Thanks Benny, I would say I agree. I tried to zoom in on the image with little success.

my first 240Z #36? had a 2400 ohc valve cover back in 1997

Dale - I suspect cars under #100 had it and those over didn't but it's pure speculation at this stage.

By the way what happened to #36?

Yeah I suspect someone would have removed mine when going to 2.8 litres because 2400cc would have been uncool at the time.

Gav,

#149 has it's original rocker cover still fitted - I know because Gordon told me so when I quizzed him if it ever had a 2400 R/Cover...

Didn't Aubs mention in a previous post that he believed only the first 50 HS30's in Aus. had the 2400 R/Cover fitted?

Ahh yes but first 50 being up to what number? Because #84 has it and if #160 had it how do we determine the cut off point?

I think part of the problem will be that the engines fitted to these cars were not in sequence with the chassis numbers. So it's possible that say #149 #150 and #151 didn't have it, but #160 did as mentioned above.

I was speaking to someone who has a couple of these and is looking to sell them, hence the question as I was wondering if my car should have 1.

When I bought no. 63 in 1999 it had the 2400 OHC cover.

Thanks Enright, for the longest time I didn't actually think our cars received this cover. I thought any that were around were imported from the US. But good to hear several cars have had it that were early.

Looks like we somewhat discussed this before.

Nissan Super 6's had these covers also, so perhaps that is also a reason we see them on later cars?

I've asked Rob at the Z Factory about this a while ago and with all the zeds he's seen over many years, he told me they were on random cars. Unless they have been changed with engine transplants etc.

So it would seem that early cars didn't have a typical structure to when they received these covers. Some got it some didn't. Which is probably similar to the way engine's and their engine numbers were assigned to cars.

Update on this, Carl Beck reckons the 2400 OHC cover was fitted up until around July 1970.

Current BAT listing for: HLS30 08883 (Build 8/1970)

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-datsun-240z-69/

L24-012699 (E31 block)

Nissan 2400 OHC cover

The car is:

1971_datsun_240z_15395642887860010a58b2F

HS30 00084 had L24-013021 so a slightly higher engine number.
