Last time i had the car tuned, Jim at smart automotive (respected bris based mechanic) said that my carbs were not matching as one had the progression holes tampered with and therefore really hard to tune. ran too lean up top and to rich down low and wasnt 100% happy with it. Looking today i see there are 2 different types on the car I have 2 dcoe53 and 1 dcoe54. wondering what the differences are and how difficult Italian 53s are to find as I suspect its the 54 that has been mucked with. am wondering if I should hunt for a 53 to match or buy a new set of spanish made carbs. I heard they arent great but never really figured out why. would love 44 mikuni but that means a new match ported manifold also

cheers

Certain versions of dcoe were fitted as std equip on some cars, ie Alfa's mainly.

Yes, there are internal differences, mainly the progression passages that supply air up to the throttle plates, some have two, some have three ports, and, the ports that feed air into the well that the emulsion tube assy sits in.

NFI why they did it!

Only suggestion would be get onto some of the Italian specialists here in Brisb, Richard Anderson s an Alfa nut, Jim will have his number,

Or try FiatTorque -Ross&Graham Smith, in Sydney, or Bits Of Italy, bloke there is Phillip?? Bugee

You'll need both body and top, take pics of your other matched two, of them with top cover on, and top cover removed.

Why you have the odd one?? 'Cos when the bloke who put them on originally, he grabbed a pair off one model car, and a random close one, off another car!

Could also be a set of old Valiant triples, they ran two the same number and one different number to work better with the old 265 for the R/T vals back in the day, the two carbies with the same numbers ran on the front and the different one ran at the back, could also have something to do with the brake vacuum hose that was fitted as an option to the E49's and E39 spec cars to the inlet runner for number 5 or 6 pot in the manifold.

Can't remember the numbers off the top of my head, but plenty of Valiant triples would have ended up being pulled off and used elsewhere when Valiants were not as loved as they are today.....
