He told me to ring PPG on 13 24 24 and talk to the folks on the phone and ask for the trim colour used on the hubcaps, grille, rear tail light garnish etc.. If they have the code great if not we will use the sample tin spray it let it dry and then come back following week and use spectrometer to try and determine the exact colour. Hey Gav. I tried to sign up on their website but they rejected me... I think you need to be a supplier or reseller to get access to their database. It's my understanding they are the same gray, I was given a sample pot of the grey/gray paint a while ago by someone who went to great lengths to get it mixed up. When I went to my technical college (Tafe) I asked about getting a sample. They said I should ring PPG first and tell them it was used on the grille, tail lamp garnish, hubcaps etc.. and see if they have the code for it. They seemed pretty confident they would. if not they said, we can use my sample pot to spray something up then use a colour spectrometer to analyse it and get a code. I haven't been back to the Tafe course for the past month. It should be starting again soon if nobody has had any luck with this before then. KatoKid Posted July 27, 2016 Share Posted July 27, 2016 There is an old Datsun specialist workshop next to my panel shop who has a NOS tail light surround for a 180B that he thinks is the same grey as used on the Z's and the panelshop can match from that. The thread has been very useful for me to get my rear panels painted in the right colour.I know from this thread that the number plate light is the same colour for 240Z.Is the rear number plate light is the same colour as the valance panel on 2+2? My light has been painted the same colour as the car so I am not sure if it is correct.The photo I have included shows the same thing. gilltech Posted August 8, 2016 Share Posted August 8, 2016 The never repainted number plate light and rear panels on my red 260 2-seat are a matching graphite/grey coloured plastic. The registration plate panel is the same or close enough given that the substrate is different as it's painted metal not plastic. Q. is that Duplicolor Graphite 102 still a current number? Groundhog Posted August 8, 2016 Share Posted August 8, 2016 The photo above is of someone else's car. I used it as an example. Mine is in the paint shop so I couldn't use my own car as an example. I know now that if the number plate light is painted body colour it is a sure sign of a repaint. So the rear panels are probably not the right colour. It makes sense when you imagine the car assembly process that the body shell was painted first and the valance and numberplate light added after from a stock of all the same colour. Then you get into the discussion about what colour/ coating the retaining screws should be. I imagine they would just be the metal plating colour. The HWP102 Graphite colour is darker than the photo, as per all the previous posts. I have learned that if you don't shake the can for the good minute they recommend then the colour comes out different with more "flakes" in it. Ibert, car looks fantastic. Well done. gilltech Posted August 8, 2016 Share Posted August 8, 2016 Oh right, I misunderstood & assumed it was yours pre-repaint. Hard to tell colours from photos, all depends on the lighting at the time. Yes as you say the number plate light unit is a grey plastic on top, IIRC has white underneath, so not painted, while the screws and threaded clips are metal plating colours, only installed after all painting complete just like the taillights etc etc. If you need a photo just let me know.
