MATTY
Hi all after working on my L28 swap i though i would put up my build progress..... but before all that ill start from the beginning These were taken the following morning after driving her home from the gold coast, making it home with out missing a beat. not much was done to it when i brought it. -new windscreen -new door rubber kit -both doors re-skinned and reupholstered door cards -new roof lining -The XXR Mags 15" X 8" alround -280zx 5 speed manual conversion -and minimal rust just a few spots on the rear quater on the drivers side and a few spots on the floor pans all was well til later that day.... it felt a bit tight shifting down from 3rd to second and then locked up and stalled shifting back into 3rd after taking off in the middle of an intersection i wasnt able to get it in or out of gear fully so i had to limp it out the way to the side of the road. while waiting for a tilt tray i took the most of a bad opportinity and took some quick pic's after getting her tilt trayed to a mechanics upon inspection was told third gear had let go so to speak and did a little damage needing a full rebulid and 1100 bucks later but for the mean time i brought a second hand one here of the forum and it went in to get her driving again alittle export rattle can silver and she looks brand new. Unfortunetley i couldnt so SFA on the car with the gearbox at the time as this was my shed :/ but none the less it was operational again. skip ahead a few months later i had a proper shed to work out of again!! and plus my personalised plates finally arived. the following weekend i got stuck into cleaning up and respraying the engine bay and interior i resprayed the engine bay and some of the trouble spots in the interior with this stuff. worked a treat and is still holding up and is very tough and durable too but i was pretty impressed for what it was and wasnt expecting the best of finish but it came out pretty bloody good. while i was at i hit the rocker cover with some little wire brushes that fit in a drill. after having completed the engine bay and interior i cleaned up my center console and filled in the radio facia with a bit of alloy sheet perfect for fitting gauges on later down the track and my mystery switch...... which was eventually going to be used for my thermo fans but i always have people asking what its for. oh and i cant forget my alf stewart sticker (i also have one in my daily 180sx) always gets a few laughs the next few months i just enjoyed going to a few car show and showing her off one of the local shows my car club went to another meet/cruise downshift meet brisbane downshift rocklea every now and again id be lurking the forum for any engines up for sale and stumbled across the motor and gearbox package that BobsYourUncle had up for sale so i snapped that up while i could so far it turns out to be a worthy investment. also not having a GF anymore due to me spending more time on or with the zed than her and a few other things ment i had nothing or no one to stop me pushing on with and engine swap and throwing money at the old girl (too behonest i think i made the betterchoice in the long run ) the motor spent afew weeks sitting by her lonesome till i got my engine crane back. and a little bit more money for some new engine mounts and trans mount. i would have been right if i didnt splash out one some plates for the daily;) Heres the link for the ad - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,12568.0.html majority of my evening was spent in the shed pulling out the motor and box with the help of a mate leaving us with this and the lovely new shed ornamnet the old L26 while the motor was out i though it can hurt to change the steering rack bushes too ( wise choice given the situation) out with the old and in with the new! it took me afew weeks to get every thing sorted but it only to us bout 4-5 hours to pullout the old motor and about the same to fit the new motor. in between the waiting for the second engine bay paint touch ups i this my mags with some plumb purple not every one likes it but its starting to grow on me. the majority of the swap was straight forward but i ran into a problem with the fan but that problem was sorted thanks to Be Zed with a different off set that sits beautifully. also having the earlier flange type 240 box ill have to change my slave cylinder for it to suit my clutch fork as the one of my 280zx box has a different shaft off the piston that just sat in a small indentation on the other clutch fork and the 240 one has a rounded nut on the end that it pivots on by memory. but once thats sorted all i need to do is fill up all the fluids and refit my radiator and tidy up some of the engine bay wiring and try to wire in my hazard light switch also. not long to go now! Administrators gav240z Posted June 3, 2013 Administrators Share Posted June 3, 2013 Love your enthusiasm mate! Car is looking good, I love the photo with the Evo and Supra, the Z just looks so much more elegant in my opinion. Is your 180sx a Type X? Looks good next to the Z in the shed . I can only hope to have a garage like that some day soon!
Fairlady Z
good starting point with Z and nice 180. u dont see many clean 180sx expecialy type x they all seem to have been butchered for some front end conversion and rubish fiberglass kits. Typex is the only kit that 180sx needs. and some decent rims and lowered. but idiots abuse them. nice Z by the way. but not sure on the wheel color choice. I prefered it black. but as long as you like it doesn't matter what i or others think.
MATTY
Thanks guys And yep she's a genuine type x with the optional factory type x rear pods too. It's relatively stock just a few bolt on and a gt2871 pushing out 176kw atw on 12psi so its enough for a daily. its not 100% tidy I've got a ding in my drivers side to thanks to and idiot who can't park a car and a lovely key scratch on the rear quarter a week before I brought her :/ But zed wise it seems to be a relatively solid base to work with. I'm sort still 50/50 on the wheel colour myself but I'm keen on getting some rota shakotans possibly but that's after I've got her running again. Love your enthusiasm mate! I can only hope to have a garage like that some day soon! I can tell you now that Evo isn't as sedate as it looks either but the zed takes all the attention and class haha. And to think I could of had an GTR 32 parked next to the zed a few months back

MATTY
I finally mustered up the courage to brave the cold comforts of my shed tonight with some aided motivation with some fear factory cranked for me and my neigbours to listen to and made a little more progress in getting the old girl back on the road. i was held up waiting on a new slave cylinder as i didnt realise that the 240 and 280 boxes were different but none the less she's sorted and i should have a working clutch. i put the radiator back in which just clears the fan, about half an in clearance that is that Be-Zed gave me from the sausage run day i cant be thankful enough ( a few cold beverages are definately owed there ) for that fan which saved me a lot of time waiting til i had found one. ill also have to source a new bottom radiator hose that suits the L28 tomorrow. New fuel lines and filter were also fitted along with a new oil filter and oil. i swapped my reverse light switch off my old box as the one on current 240 box was to far gone to savage ( ill have to try to find a picture) So tomorrow when ive got a bit more time ill have to fill the gear box and tighten the tail shaft. fit my bottom radiator hose providing i can get one, fit my catch can, cut and shut my throttle linkage to suit the dellortos and fill the radiator with coolant. and fit the zorst system its taken a bit longer than i would have liked but have to to get this far but a few things with my daily like its service and a boost spike of 20 psi problem held me up, oh and having to go to wynnum to help my mate look at a tommi makinen evo 6.5 only because he thinks i know every thing given that (his words) i own a turboed car lol.which he ended up buying that day, probably didn't help my time management either so thats about it till tomorrow Cheers Matty
be-zed
( a few cold beverages are definitely owed there Now that sounds like a plan and I will take you up on that . Perhaps at Jason's BBQ if you can make it or at Christmas time when we have an annual run .Toowoomba would be a nice place to have it this year.If you have any trouble with the triple carbs drop me note and I will see if I can be of any help. MATTY
Well its been slack again but pulled the finger out and finished up a few more things on the old girl this arvo. amongst the down time waiting on parts i had painted a few little things here and there to experiment will colours and style. one of these parts just happened to be the plastic surrounds on tail lights. BEFORE AFTER like the purple wheels im still undecided but i still have a second set with the chrome paint if i ever want to swap them back so ill see how they go if anything i made more progress with my shed set up and storage for the old motor and my surplus parts and gear box. having an old recycled trolley and some scrap RHS i borrowed my mates little lincoln electric hobby welder i came out with this. i made it so i can have a little bench on top that can be lifted off if i need to access/work on the motor. and then using the top half i have my 'slammed' or 'stanced' parts trolley if you will. but over all its a fuctional set up but back to the zed, i check and re tightened up the tail shaft bolts and an excuse for me to play with my birthday present from my self my gear wrench metric (shown in the picture) and imperial ratchet spanners, i scored both sets through work for $194!! i filled the gearbox up whilst i was lying down doing nothing and was going to fit the exhaust but the one i got with the motor is a tad too short and the mounts dont line up so ill just have to modifiy my old zorst and i should be fine. so that will give me something to keep myself occupied through the week till i get my new coolant outlet. as you can see in the pic above the old one off the L26 is stuffed and the L28 one is in better condition but doesnt fit/suit my raidiator hose so ill have to order a replacement L26 one through the week. but the weekend was not a total loss i finished up by washing both the ladies i never get sick of this view Cheers Matty oldmates260z
MATTY
i might have been a bit too eager tonight with the zed i thought id go weld my exhaust up at around 6:30pm i had to finish mounting my vice to the make shift work station and then hack up the new old exhaust to re use the flange for my original zorst so it would fit again. I was quite suprised i just bolted up my rear exhaust mount and line up my exhaust besides the headers and marked it, cut it down to size, refitted the exhaust and tack the flange in place and it was spot on angle and all couldnt believe it! im not 100% happy with my welds but this would have to be the first exhaust system ive made/changed that wasnt a total stuff around. i would have of liked to done better but its not too back considering i only had a little 180amp Lincoln electric welder i borrowed off a mate( it a fantastic little unit!) running 0.8 gasless wire. eventually a new zorst will be on the cards but this will keep her happy for now after all that i glanced at my phone after taking some pictures and it was near on 7:45pm having tidied up i then spent the remaining hours working out approx wire lengths and layout andextra switch position for when i do my led ligh up grade for my gauges and just general plotting around. nothing beats the single life and being able to spend the whole night in the shed with out being annoyed or getting in trouble over. i even cut and shut my throttle linkage so it now fits all be it but the plastic gomet that centralises the linkage off the carbies to the fire wall somewhere over the course of the engine saw ive miss placed it. im thinking it should be an easy fix to make one up. all im waiting on now is the coolant outlet which is about a week or so away and then i can finally fire the old girl up again!
