bazza07
HI all, I have a major project i am working on...its been devil. And its had several helpers helping it get here. A 260z 2 + 2. The car was recently removed from a settled shed .driven i time a month affair until it got less often. I got it and ran it everyday...and have been replacing parts reg as each day passes. The recent event was a overheat that was rads fault but it damaged the head as well. The head been machined, and rad rebuilt. On replacement the cam shaft snapped at the join...near 5-6. it has really warped...and an assistant had undone all bolts from one end not sequenced. Because a few parts got missing ..the front timing ass was removed to look for floating parts just in case. A second hand cam was found. Fitted and no 2nd snap! Thank god. The new issue is this.....no one remembers if the timing bracket was on the motor on the dissy side...yes there is a bracket on the alternator side ... Q1 do datsun 260z have a dual timing bracket..or are they ment to have one.... Q2 if one is ment to be on alternator side ..or air con (dissy side) we also have an issue with dissy --- rotor alignment for position spark plug cyc1, I am , from memory believe position1 is with the dissy vac advance pointing towards front rad corner.. and rotor pointing to front rad ...also being the lowest far forward on the left of the dissy. and from mem..the layout...i thought was sp1 / coil wire / sp5 /sp3 / sp6 / sp2/ sp4 starting from the front and going anti clock However a few shots -- pictures of someones layout of dissy cap off , with position 1 and timing mark matching ..would help as would disssy cap on....and plug leads marked to show position on the dissy for position 1 and all leads being seen traceable in the picture to the right spark plug. i will make sure i note them...and can check... if i need the larger timing bracket for 260z ( that goes on the dissy side) where would i get one? The other issue seems to be , since the head was done ...and cam changed over i got to reset all valves...cold first...then hot.. so these other settings are important. Any help would be great ..pictures are great too! thanks big baz
bazza07
hi all can someone please confirm is 260z have a timing mark brackets o both sides of the engine...? mine has only the bracket on the fuel pump side.a smaller bracket then would be on the other side... if anyone could place their engine on top dead centre , and take a shot of dissy with the rotor on.and the dizzy cap off..so i could see for sure NO 1 should pointing forward to the rad..and at what oclock reading..that is.... and know the detailed dissy post for number 1 if someoe marks their leads on that dissy cap so i can confirm where no 1 no2 no3 ...and so on is that will confirm if i have correct spark plug lead connection.. i figured that spark gap was 18---22 dont know the dwell angle and the idle timing i not sure either. anyway i am sure someone has a phone cam and could take a few pictures to help me out.. before i get into the set the valves thing... thanks bazza
Linton
I can tell you if it has air con its on the opposite side of the pully, the easiest way I find to work out number one is to take out number 1 plug, I use a bit of rag and stuff it into the plug hole, crank the motor with the key abit at a time when you see the rag pop out its coming up on compression, then by hand turn the engine until the pully is on TDC. where ever the rotor is pointing is number one, it can be any position on the cap, mines 180 deg out from the last duffas who mucked around with the oil pump. it really doesn't matter what position it is, so long as you know which one it is so the firing order is right... 153624 HTH Linton
bazza07
thanks linton.. i understand i could place no1 where ever... however... i like to place No1 where the maker prefers to put it.. hence why i asked here. I have also asked, because a number of helpers have helped while i was not there. And now i left to really get it going.. there was several parts missing in the parts buckets ..hece why someone took apart the front riming cover due to someone doing a oops on timing belt..would you believe even undoing it ! and loosing the joiner..... i ever saw the timing mark bracket on air cond side and never took the timing cover off or on..So bear with me..i trying to find out what i got without having to take it all off at the front again. If the timing chain is correct 100%. (If i can save it from here in...i got the head fitted/chain right/cam fitted/front back on/ rad in etc/ leaves me with finding real timing mark....and bracket. i dont have air con compressor there its been taken out. And i think for timing it be easyer now on that side. so...where factory no 1 is would be best for me . while sorting this all out.. and hence factory spark plug layout sorry to be a pain...however i just want to make things right ..for ease later.. thanks bazza
Linton
Bazza my cap has number 1 next to the post??.. if you have aligned the pump and the distributor shaft correctly, when you look in the hole from the front, you will see the shaft it has the straight edge in the middle and one side smaller than the other you have to have the small side to the front if you have this correct you cant put the distributor in wrong it only goes in one way and where the rotor is pointing has to be number one. bazza07
thanks linton... so we now talking about the view of the dissy hole with the dissy out...and slotted drive shaft that fits into the dissy drive shaft. i not sure what direction of the slot is when my no1 is compression stroke. i do know the slotted hole is not centered by favours 1 side of centre...and should therefore be only a one way fit..deal.. i will have to check and confirm where my no1 and slot alignment are. what your saying is your alignment is slot in line with radiator and small side closest to the radiator ....correct....which when the dissy is fitted correctly gives the rotor pointing to no1... right bazz
