53-681
Hello everyone, I have purchased a set of reclining seatbelts from a 280Z in the americas, but unfortunately it doesn't fint without looking dodgy as in my 260Z... So I'm thinking of just re-installing the original non-reclining seat belts, but wondering if the car would pas roadworthy in that condition??? Have any of you got background knowledge regarding this matter??? (I know Lurch definitely would, but he just isn't posting to any of my topics these days...) 1600dave
If the car was orginally fitted with non-retractable belts from the factory, you'll be fine so long as they are in good condition. Safety regs, ADR's, that sort of stuff doesn't apply retrospectively - one of my cars pre-dates seatbelts being compulsory, so I am able to drive it without belts at all if I want. 53-681
Ohhh shweeeeeeeeeeeeet! Time to sell the 280Z belts and clippers then Also, Dave you wouldn't happen to have a burgundy colored Z with some ZG wheel flares would ya?
tbscobraZ
I was told that I would need retractable seatbelts. I wanted to install harnesses. Mine is a 1975, what year is yours?
1600dave
Nope, don't own a burgundy Zed. I fail to see how you could be required to fit retractable seat belts if the car wasn't originally fitted with them from the factory (not sure on when they were fitted as standard though). Taken to the extreme, if the car originally had non-retractable belts, then fitting retractable ones would be an unauthorised modification to essential safety equipment and should probably be engineered. 53-681
I agree with Dave as that makes logical sense. Mine's a 1974

Correct 100% If it had non retractable from factory, then it should retain them for rego. Changing from a non retractable to retractable seatbelt requires engineering approval. THERE IS AN EXCEPTION!!!!! there are some cars that are recognised by the RTA as the standard seat mounts are fine to be used with a retractable setup. You need to contact the local tech standards dept and ask them specifically about your car. You'll probably find that you'll be fine to do it, as the later year models had retractables and you can fit the system as a complete setup to factory points that are the same amongst all the body shells. fwiw, my zed is a 75 and it has retractables in it. Daedalus-Z
It may pay to check the ADRs that are specified on the plate in the engine bay? ADR4 is seat belts... ADR4A requires at least static lap-sash (in front seats) and ADR4B (started in '75?) requires inertia-reel Lap-Sash belts.... Or at least that's what a quick bit of internet searching suggests!
