Sooley
I have converted my car to Powersteer by using the early model MX5 P/Steer Rack and Nissan N13 Pulsar Tie Rod ends. You will need to cut and re thread the rack end and notch out a little bit of the cross member also for it to sit neatly. Overall this is a very easy mod and will I am sure make a big difference. Another point is that it may help with the bump steer problem also as you will have longer rack arms and should be able to get more travel out of the tie rod ends. Here is a pic Sooley
tattoo_ink
awsome thanks for that ! im on a mission now ! i didnt realy want to chop up the cross member to much so thats sounds like a plan ! thanks again ! chris.
620Z
Looks good. I to will have to get onto this sooner rather than later. My new 3.9 LSD should arrive today so I will get that one in first. I plan on strengthening the diff mounts at the same time to eliminate any vibration under strong acceleration.
Sooley
Might want to look at that custom alloy diff mount. they sell them on ebay, paid about $70 for mine I think. Will cope with the power a lot more.
620Z
Thanks for the heads up Sooley. I will have a look or try and contact them direct. Do you know their trading name? I will try Custom Diff Mounts.

Think its cheaper to. Sooley
620Z
No worries Sooley. I have booked the car in to have the diff swapped over and the mounts re done before the Nation. Hopefully this will eliminate the last of the minor vibration under full acceleration.
Sooley
It will make a big difference. Sooley
apsilon
I plan on doing the same conversion at some point. Can you confirm that the rack used is from an early NA MX-5 (the 1.6)?
Sooley
They are wll the same all the way from the 1.6 to 1.8 from what I am told. I used the 1.6 rack. Sooley
apsilon
Thanks. I think the 1.8 NA had a slightly different ratio and the later 1.8 is a slightly different rack.
sco_aus
Ok, well I have done a bit of looking around. I have found a place called www.mx5mania.com.au . I emailed them and they can supply a power steering rack from a NA model 1.6L MX5 for $250. N13 Tie rod ends are about $15 each from repco. I would be using a RB25 power steering pump which I could probably get for about $150. But there is something Im not sure about, how does the steering column go when connecting to the rack? Sooley
Great work The Steering arm is on a universal so it will work just fine. You will have to notch out the cross member a little but it will fit great. Use Poly bushes and that will firm up the front end too. They also make a Poly steering arm bush that helps too. apsilon
Mania are great, I'd recommend them. Last time I looked though I thought they were $400 so $250 is a bargain.
sco_aus
Yeh I know, good stuff. But sooley, do you know how the steering column connects to the MX5 rack? Its the only thing I need to know.
Sooley
Mmmm, good question. I havent done that bit yet to know. Keep me posted on what you find out Sooley
sco_aus
I may have actually found some MX5 racks for $195 not including shipping (neither were the other ones) each today. I just have to confirm they are from the 1.6L NA model. Im seriously considering doing this whilst i have the engine out of the bay. Just really need to know how the column attaches to the rack. Is anyone else interested? Who knows, maybe we can get them cheaper as a group buy.
nat0_240_chevZ
i may be in for one. however the subie rack could be an option from the pick apart or local wreck yards. also a very good swap. keep me posted with the details, as il probly need PS since i broke my back and neck!! :x was going to leave it manual steer, but i think the ps would be advisable. nato
620Z
Yeah keep me posted as well I am definately up for one. Although I would maybe prefer the rack from the 1.8 Subaru! I presume it might be a little bigger , stronger etc presuming there is a difference.
sco_aus
Well actually from what I have heard these are really strong reliable racks. But also, it is so much easier to do the MX5 conversion, compared to the subi rack. But like I said I will let you know.
620Z
Why is it easier to do with the MX5 rack. I thought you had to cut the cross member with the MX5 rack?
sco_aus
Cos you have to do this to fit a subi rack, insted of a couple of small notches. Well this is my take on it all anway, im not saying im right, just what seems to be right. http://www.viczcar.com/forums/files/imgp0646_643.jpg
620Z
Yeah I will continue my research including on HybridZed since I am not doing this mod for another 4-5 months. Diff mount first.
nat0_240_chevZ
the fellow here, i believe hes registered on this forum RBZ_260? believe it was slot and reinforce the engine stand/pedestal, and heat and bash some clearance on pass side, also i think he said a custom drivers side rack mount bush. Also rotating one half of the rack helps with lines location etc. hope he chimes in here, nato
RBZ 260
im here. yeah wha t nato said pretty much. i wasn a fan of cutting chuncks out of the cross member or drilling massive holes. bit lazy to post a pic but here is a ling from the other forum http://www.thezgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=601 all i did is made few dents using oxy set and big hammer. rotated the power head 180deg and new pipes bent up. sloted the rhs engine bracket and reinforced fromt the inside. just under 3 turns from lock to lock. though looking at he mx5 looks bit easier. but mazda parts a xpensive. i got my rebuild subi for $180 with the mods to the pipes.
