ZD44TT
Just thought I'd post a pic to ask if any of you out there have tried to dramatically lower the weight of your z? If so, what did you get it down to? And more importantly where did you take the weight out from? heres what I mean: This is defly not for the stock/purest type of Z owner so please don't flame. http://www.no-rice.com/forum/index.php?fr=420&p=vt&tid=7680
dalee
From memory I think Daniel Moore got his 240z race car down to 980kg with half a tank of fuel and him in it. Fibre bonnet, perspex rear glass, no heater box, whatts as rims etc. He runs DJM automotive & is a member here. Dale
PZG302
My Zed, check the avatar is 960kg ready to hit the track with 40l of fuel and me not in it, add extra 105kg for me  We have done the following to the car to lighten it:  Stripped interior trim, leaving dash as standard, including all instruments  removed heater box  'glass bonnet and front bar  all windows except windscreen glass is replaced with lexcen  removed all sound deadeneing and bitumen from under car, one of the worst jobs imaginable. I still run the following steel components:  hatch  front guards, however these are very thin and a re actually lighter than fibreglass, also are damaged less when hit, or hit something.. Other weight is saved by using a R180 diff plus the brakes are lighter than standard, using Willwood calipers up front and Saab down the back. The exhaust exits out the side saving some weight. We also only use about half the number of bolts the factory did to hold things together, ie front guards held on by not much more than hope a prayer and about 6 bolts. Wheels are two piece light weight alloys to also help save some unsprung weight. Extra weight is put back with fire extinguisher, cage, and strut brace plus stitched seam welded front. zr240
also in the latest issue of race magazine (aussie mag) there is an artical on lighting your car and the guy who does it is doing it to his zed. Has costs and stuff aswell Ash
ZD44TT
Some pics I found on hybrid.
Toecutter
hehe...looks odd with all those holes. The first thing I thought is whether it's worth the compromise of so little weight loss in regards to the reduced structural integrity of that section of the car. Maybe the owner found this out the hard way when they dfrilled into that rear strutt tower as they've added more weight than removed with that little brace! I've never raced cars but on a serious note, at a competative level do drivers get to a point where their own weight loss becomes an issue??? sid280
Toecutter get on the LS1 / FPV Forums and do some searches on weight reduction - I dont know if people are joking or what - but "lose some weight ya fat bastard" popped up more than once. Toecutter
hmmm...well if every kilo counts taking a big dump before a race can only help hey! ...ah enough silliness back to drilling holes in our cars!
JP240z
I accidentally drilled some holes into my doors for my sound system, I was a little shattered afterwards. But I should have thought more possitively, the car's a speed demon now that I offed that extra weight lol.
sco_aus
Man you guys make me feel fat. Im 103kg. Im twice the weight of the missus though :D Then again I am fat The bloke I bought my Simmons from on the Westsieed had taken out the boot metal or something because there wasnt a boot, just the shape of the bottom of the car. Had a few strengthening things in there but the main one was the crazy cage.
Toecutter
Well Im 93kg trying to get back to 85kg. I think I need to lose the weight more than the car, same result in the end!
zr240
ok guys just to put it in money terms The race magazine I mentioned actually did a cost per kilo on the zed they lightened (cromole cage, acrylic windows, lighter wheels etc) and they worked out it was $200 (aus dollars) per kilo!!!!! So I think you guys might have a few grand worth Ash
Toecutter
Well as I said take a big dump and save! If you win the race by only half a car length your big turd will have made all the difference!
dave_hl
I'm 105kg, do i win? or does that mean i lose?
sco_aus
Depends on if its fat like me or muscle. If its fat you WIN!!!!! Your prize, another beer and a big mac Joking

nat0_240_chevZ
mmmmm, big mac. a really good way do reduce weight in a Z is reaplace the doors with FRP type full shells, as they weigh a fair amount, also ally radiator, & less rubber seals as the seal kits weigh a bit. and yes, loosing 10kg yoursel is like adding 5kw to the engine (more like 3 or so) but where were we?? Ahh yes off to Mc Donalds for the Pounder. aka double double quarter pounder. mmmmm nato (still about 80kg after 2 months in hospital & rehab, only lost 5kg)
ZD44TT
I'm glad this thread has headed in the direct of weight reduction that we all should have control off  . *dials Jenny C*
sco_aus
aka double double quarter pounder. mmmmm So you mean a pounder??? Are we still talking about burgers??? Speaking of alloy radiators, I should be getting a 4 core made up by a guy i know who is a master at alloy welding PWR cores soon. Those fibreglass dashes might make a small difference as long as they are the right price. Might be cheaper for a salad diet.
