Hey guys

anyone have any recomendations on what sort of Paint i should use to paint suspension parts,

as im taking basically everything apart when i put in new tie rods, and all the new bushes and am taking the bits off etc, and want to paint them black, so that it just looks alot cleaner under there etc. so as its got 30 years of dirt and crap on some of the peices, so that it will be cleaner the next time i work on it etc.

not looking at getting them professiaonlly painted, just what type of spray paint etc., a black color

I went satin black as well and it is holding up well.

I would use a wire brush to really scrub all the parts and remove flaky rust and grime. I even soaked my crossmember in a lethal combination of degreaser and petrol for weeks to try and get the crap out from inside!

I know this is an old thread but it is the same question.

I am about to paint all my suspension bits including brake backing plates etc and was wondering if there was a chip resistant type paint on the market? Maybe some sort of polyurethane or something?

What have others used?

Any suggestions?

Cheers

I am going to use hammerite on my suspension bits it is a popular English product (available in Australia) used on classic cars. It will go over rust although you can't spray it. The other option is to strip any old paint off the parts and degrease them as well then soak them in 10% molassis solution to remove the rust, then spray them with wattle super etch. After you can then paint the bits with whatever you like, it all depends on how much time you have.

Called my local Repco, Bursons and Supercheap and none of them stock the VHT Epoxy paint, they tell me I need to order it in and have to buy 6 cans at a time. I probably only need 2 or 3.

So I stopped in at the local automotive paint shop, he recommended this stuff at $18 a can. It comes in a fine and a coarse finish. Anyone used it?

Yeah, Upol make good stuff but it can be expensive. The VHT Epoxy will be around $16 a can, I got mine through paint mobile in Melbourne though.

Is that UPol stuff going to be a textured finish like and underbody spray or stoneguard? The VHT is flat.

I used KBS rust seal. And also their 3-step system which cleans removes rust and etches the surface.

Flexible, chip proof, heat proof and brushale. Finish is as hard as powder coating.

+1

I've used this on the underside of Bruce's 240Z, as well as the suspension on the Escort.

It's a Urethane & is as hard as f00k when dry. Very 'chip resistant'.

It's well priced & Aussie made too...

Thanks for the info fellas.

That KBS looks like good gear but i figure it would be textured same as the u-pol.

I would prefer a flat finish and it turns out both the VHT Epoxy paint and VHT Roll Bar & Chassis paint are enamel/modified alkyds, with the same heat rating and durability characteristics. So I'm gonna use the roll bar and chassis paint which my local Bursons stock.

KBS rustseal is not textured. All brush marks flow out. If you spray it will look like regular glossy paint like powder coat or 2k. KBS is also chemical resistant aswell..much better than a epoxy imo as it inhibits rust aswell.
