Thanks RB - worked a treat.

Hey Dat2kman,  can you tell us a bit more about these calipers?  Are they OEM for a particular vehicle?  Do they bolt up for the Zeds?  Does the job require an engineering degree?  What size discs are suitable?  etc

Thank you

They are the correct FIA approved caliper for the 240z/260z and many other Nissan's (240RS also I believe). There were listed on the sport option catalogues for a number of Nissan's including out beloved Zeds. They were factory fitted to the Nissan President. As Dat2kman has stated they were/are available in non-vented (aka straight bolt on no disc changes from stock 240z/260z stuff - thus upgrading from Sumitomo 2 pots to 4 pots and a larger pad area) and vented. The vented setup required the use of the 260z hubs and a special rotor that is NLA from Nissan (last time I priced these up in the mid 90's when you could still get them they were $350USD each). However much like the Toy 4x4 other rotors can be sub in with a correct spacer and specs.

These are not light or cheap but are 100% period correct and approved/homologated for the S30z.

So they are basically the same as hilux but factory made and therefore approved for historic racing. What size are the pistons? How do they compare with hilux 12+8 (pad area looks slightly bigger) ? Are parts/pads easily available for them or do they need to be imported?

Here's some extra pics I found  :)

Well given MK63's were around long before the Toyota (Sumitomo manufactured) 4x4 aka 12+8/S14W/S13W it is the other way around ie the 4x4 4 pots are like the MK63's ;) I believe some countries have agreed that there is next to no major advantage in running the newer Sumitomo S12W/12+8 so these are permitted as MK63 substitutes - but that does depend on your local racing rules and what CAMS (and other competitors) will permit. PADs and parts can be found in Japan - so I assume importing is the only option.

Last time I ordered parts for my MK63 I purchased new pistons, seals and PADS (DS11 for those that recall those pads ;) and I still have them new in the box :D) but that was early 90's

Sumitomo only recently stop manufacture the MK63's (2 or maybe 3 years ago - so that was a long production run from the early 60's to 00's

These are not cheap budget items, if you are gonna question re hilux vs these, just go hilux, simple and easy.

if you want true period authentic, these are the original Nissan Option parts.

I can supply a 2 piece vented disc ( hub and disc assy) at $1150 AUD a set

The calipers are vented at $1270 AUD a set,

the pads are $380 AUD a set in the race compound.

i can also get the S30 stock caliper pads in race compound, they work quite well

There is stock of pads and seal kits, and vented calipers, but non vented ( straight bolt on to stock disc) is almost NLA

Guy has most reamaining stock left in the world.

Also can source the race pads for most other older Nissans.  also has rare factory vented rotors for older GC110/210 Skylines and 240K's, with the Sumitomos being fritted to these for Jap Domestic racing duty

Hilux Sumi's are not the same, but close, and pads wont fit. Brake pad shops dont seem to be able to supply race compounds for Hilux, best option is a h/d 4wd pad, and watch when they fade!

That is not a bad price given what you are getting. $1270 a set - try and price up the period correct AP calipers and good race pads for Wilwoods etc are $500 a set here in NZD (that is funny money to you Ozzies)

There is a reason I have sold 3 set of Hilux calipers but have always kept my MK63's ;) at that price I might be tempted to have a new set on the shelf next to my second hand units :D

FWIW, WRX/R32/R33/Z32 pads will fit the Toyota Sumi's - with only the smallest amount of grinding a couple of the corners. This means that there are a significant number of performance pads available for those who don't need to homologated setup and are using the toyota parts.

I'd love to have MK63's on my car, but there are race cars out there with a greater need :)

I had a hard time finding pads for my non vented 12+8's. I was told the vented hilux calipers would accept those late model pads also, but that the non vented calipers were a different pad shape. Is this true?  :o

All profiles are available at full-size (i.e. to scale) on the DBA website.

I can't remember if there is a profile difference between the vented vs. non-vented Sumi's. I was running metal kings in my non-vented ones for a few years.

So for those wondering about MK63 vs Toyota Hilux 4 pot calipers. I asked about the weight difference and here is the result.

Hey Nils,

Can you tell me what the weight difference between the MK63 calipers and the standard 2 pot calipers? A popular conversion is usually the Toyota Hilux 4 pot calipers but I’ve had a pair and they are very very heavy. I’m wonder how heavy these are in relation to stock calipers on a 240z? If you have a way of measuring the weight differences I’d really appreciate it.

Hi Gavin. Sure i can I just put both of them on a very accurate Envelope-scale and i got surprising result. The MK63 is even lighter than the standard two pot

So weights are:

MK63 Solid disk type including brake-pads: 4.300 Kgs

Standard two pot OEM including brake-pads: 4.445 Kgs

You can see in the picture that the MK63 design is quite slim compared to the Chunky two-pot caliper design

hope that helps.

I had a pair of Toyota Hilux Calipers in the past and I can tell you they weigh a lot compared to the standard 2 pots. I didn't install them on my S30z because of the additional weight. I did drive a 260z with them on and whilst the braking force was improved you could feel the weight in the front end.

I would not install the Hilux 4 pot calipers myself. The fact that the MK63 design is lighter than stock is pretty incredible also.

Wondering if anyone knows if the MK63s would clear the standard 14" steel wheels or not?

Yes and no (of course...!)

The non-vented disc type MK63s will clear 5j TOPY steels, but not 4.5js. You will need a shim type spacer (just 6mm or so) and the same with the vented disc type MK63-20S calipers.

Both vented and un-vented will clear most aftermarket 14" and up alloy wheels. Personally I would not bother with the un-vented type as it seems somewhat pointless to run such a big pad on a solid disc and suffer from heat-induced fade right when you need them most. I had them on my very first 240Z and they were really nice around town, but pressing-on it didn't take long to get some rather frightening heat fade and pad glazing. Switched to vented discs and the wider MK63-20S and all that was pretty much solved. Can crack discs occasionally though...

Thanks Alan,

I wasn't aware there was a vented and non-vented version of this caliper*. I agree if you're going to upgrade may as well take advantage of vented discs to reduce fade.

*Edit just realised reading this thread again that 2 different versions were mentioned. Never mind me.

By the way what discs do you use with these calipers? Or where do you source the vented ones?

On the Zs, I use a Peugeot 505GTI vented disc which is re-drilled to suit the PCD of the Nissan hub. I use 'late' hubs (nominally '260Z' type) to give the right offset. This centres the vented type MK63 over the disc nicely. It seems to be the simplest solution to the non-availability of the original Nissan 'Sports Option' (and later NISMO) vented disc, and the Peugeot discs are cheap as chips.

H190 live rear end runs a slipover type rotor, dimensions very similar to VB Commdore vented front.

The vented type MK63 over the Nissan vented rotor, has 14" rims fitting ver the calioers.

H190 rear end is an ex Group B 240RS Rally car.

Same caliper was used on front vented S30 bdy, but not this rotor.

An alternative front rotor to Peugot 505 ( hard to btain in Australa) is a SAAB 9000. Very similar, but will need some minr machining, and final centering skim to one rotor side to fit caliper equally (1.1 mm)
