240Z Rear Outer Weatherstrip Seal

I bought an OEM rubber seal kit from a supplier in the US, but I have a question concerning the rear hatch outer weather strips (there are two, one per side).

The strips I was supplied with for the outer rear don't look right. They are flat rubber strips of about 70 or 80cm in length. The profile is flat with a squared off end that sits onto the outer metal seam. The rubber strip at the the top of the hatch, by comparison is a round shaped profile, that sits more convincingly in the gap that appears to be made for it. Think of a strip of rubber that has an 'L' shaped profile is the best way to describe these outer strips.

Has anyone else used OEM outer rubber weather strips, and how are they fitted and what is their profile?

pictures speak a 1000 words...

these are my OEM rubbers.. for the "oval" shaped one (next to the main hatch rubber) I just used a good quality silicon.

The flattish one goes on the underside of the hatch (mines still the factory original) and the round/oval one goes on the body..

The perimeter seal to the right was also replaced.

Thats excellent detail Chris ... thanks.

To be clear, I went on line and checked with the vendor of the flat 'L' profile rubber he sold me and he was absolutely sure the part he sold me was OEM... but i'm still confused. Are you saying there is a rubber that fits on the underside of the actual hatch itself???? Is this the flat 'L' profile rubber part I am referring to?

From what i have seen on all the diagrams, on the 240Z, there are three rubber parts;

1) the inner hatch seal - looks like Darrel Lea Licorice and feels just like that too might I add... It fits on the main body cavity. I bought this part OEM.

2) the outer hatch seal - being in three parts, one on the the top, that wraps around the top of the outside of the opening, and two additional pieces that fit onto the outside side rails ... and these look ROUND like the photo you have included. Just to add some more confusion on this matter, I have added a photo of a japanese guy with a seriously seriously 100% OEM 240z that I have been using as a reference .. and his outside rear hatch seal rubbers are a mildly different profile to those in your photos (as I say, just to throw a spanner in at this point), and

3) you're telling me there is an actual rubber seal that is fixed (by what means?) to that actual hatch panel itself. Are you able to send another photo, or show me where in the parts diagram this part fits? Is it glued? or does it fit into a cavity? Is this the elusive 'L' piece that I am in possession of, but do not know where it goes?

Sorry for the confusion .. but i'm confused.

Cheers

Adam

Woops sorry Adam ...I confussed myself.. :P

The under hatch rubber is NOT factory...I installed it myself to help eliminate possible fumes and its worked a treat..very observant  8)

its basically 10-12mm wide semi rigid foam thats came sticky on one side...I'd like to think you can buy it from bunnings, but I cant recall where i got it from.

hmmmm your right about the outer seal, quite different....I suspect the picture above is "more" OEM than mine...most importantly they both do the same job.

what are others using for outer hatch seals ?

There's a restorer in the US acf321, who sells full length "licorice" (one piece, not 3 piece), Banzai Motorworks is the business...you could try emailing them

Pete

PS I believe the "L" shape was made and fitted after a certain model year but I'm not sure when...I bought that same 3 piece style you bought but I sent mine back for a refund, it's not what I want for my Zed, I'm going for a one piece, I'll either buy one eventually or make one...I do think you'll need to glue on what ever rubber you use there because there's not really enough "bite" to hold tight on the pinch weld
