Hi

I know it might be a big ask but i am looking for a replacement roof/ roof skin as the 260z 2 seater i have has had a sunroof cut into it. If anyone has a roof, sesction of a roof or knows someone in the Brisbane area that will do a good job in making up a replacement section it would be great to hear from you :)

Cheers

I found a roof locally here in Vic and got it chopped off for around $100-. Oh mine was a 2+2. Bit of a diff I know but keep an eye out there are plenty of old Zeds around rusted up going cheap as parts cars. I didn't replace the whole roof. We recessed a lip around the hole. Cut out the new roof plate to sit in side it. Then welded around. Worked perfect. You wouldn't know. Made a big difference to cooling the car (As a lot of heat comes through the glass) plus less road noise from the wind. It's a good move.

That would be because the roof is not flat. If you want the lines or slight curve of the roof line to look natural I would go with cutting a section off another roof. you might even get away with a 2+2 going onto a 2 seater. But you would have to do your home work on that one.

In the short amount of time that I've owned a 240z I can think of about three cars I've seen that have had the sunroof removed.

all of them had sheet metal welded into place and then shaped.

I'm not saying it's the best way, but by far easier and cheaper.

I've removed my roof skin for rust reasons and trust me, It's not something you really want to do. It's very thin and has no support once removed.

Even mine will need reshaping once welded back on.

David,

If you're on the North side of Brisbane give Gasoline Alley at Brendale a call. They specialise in restorations of old school cars. My Charger is currently there undergoing a full restoration.

They have the capabilities to do all the work in house including forming panels as they have the correct english wheels to allow them to roll roofs and so on.

As part of my Charger restoration they did exactly what you are after, make and graft in a panel to fill in the hole left by shitty cheap glass sunroff fitted in the 70's-80's.

Here's the link to their web site......www.gasolinealley.com.au

They aren't cheap, but the quality is second to none and I can't recommend John and the boys highly enough. As well as the Charger resto, they have done general mechanical work on my old AU XR6 ute and also done some fabricating work for my 240 Race car.

In regards to what V8datto said, it can be the cheapest and easiest way but just make sure you have someone who really knows what they are doing. Because the roof is so thin, it starts to warp when it gets any heat in it, so welding up the hole isn't as easy as it sounds.

i would be very hesitant in welding in a new section because of the warping from the heat.

I just recently replaced my whole roof skin to do away with my sunroof and it is definitely the best way to do it, providing you can buy you can find a decent rust free roof.

If i didnt find a roof i would have glued in a new section with a lap joint.

Yes you herd right glue it in

The glue to use is from 3m and and is called panel bond.

Doing it this way you will not produce any heat so there will be no warping

At the  very most i would have placed a tack weld in each corner to make sure it didnt move

I can remember at trade school we actually replaced the bottom half of a door skin with this method  and after we finished we smashed it with a sledge hammer to see if we could brake it, but we couldnt

Mick,

Just to back you up, when I was assessing with AAMI, I did an assessment on the very first smashed VS Commodore requireing an entire Bulk Head replacement, when the beater rang Holden for the parts, there was an alert sent out by Holden, this was the first reported bulkhead change, problem was these things wernt welded in but urethaned, these days they all are.

Long story short, Holden techs came out to oversee the change over in workshop conditions, the bulkhead was pre-painted by the shop, and glued in place, all went well.

These days the entire dash wiring on Commodores and falcons are pre assembled on the bulkhead and glued in place as a single assy on the line.

This also means that a lot of new cars are written off for the pure fact that the process of gluing in new bulkheads is a serious process, and most cars hit where the bulkhead is only slightly warped cant be beaten and welded up at a skirt rail intersection, you must replace the entire assy.

So if you are looking at a smashed car at the auctions beware, there is good reason why they were written off to start with.

This has been Panel Repair 101 session 2 presented by Mick and John.O.

Mick

In my last year with AMMI, I attended a seminar on future production techniques.

The word is that within the next 10 years we will see a return to VW beetle style construction where everything is a composite bolt or glue item.

Imagine a chassis made up of composite components that are crash zoned for impact, you simply unbolt the damaged sections, and replace them instead of unplucking seam welds rails skirts gussets etc etc etc, onto that you have tight tolerence fitting panels that just bolt on also like the old VW panels.

And if you look at some of the Benz's currently out there they are already using composite plastic skirts that are bolted on including guards.

The Z4 BMW's have been using rear 1/4 in the same way now for almost 10 years.

The other great point with plastics is....

A they dont rust

B they have a degree of form memory meaning they will bounce back in a minor impact

C They can be formed more acurately into much more complex shapes

D Easier to re-cycle

And to further prove the point, headlamp glass these days is all plastic, and has 10 times the impact resistence of glass 3 times as heavy and twice the thickness.

remind me to tell you the story about the factory poooohba with the VS commodore radiators, and the Vic police problem with power steering in the first of the 5.7 litre cars, they are classics !

yeh i have herd all about that with the panel industry heading towards r&r.

the beater will soon be extinct. This is why i want to go more towards restoration, because it is what i enjoy the most

i will be sure to remind you to tell me that story. I love hearing dirty gossip about holdens lol

Thanks for all the responses guys.

i think i might try vinny's suggestion first and see if i can find a simillar shaped piece to fit the hole i have. i cant think of many cars that have similar roof curves but i figure there may be some out there with bonnets or boots that have a compound curve that may work.

ill keep you posted - probably in a different thread instead of the wanted section :P

I have a roof skin from my basket case 240z, it has some rust damage on the edges and front right corner but the bulk of it is good.  If I let it go I'll be finally admitting the Z truly is a lost cause  :'(  What should I ask for a 2 seater roof skin?
