Aftermarket performance air filters.

Hi all,

Has anybody fitted aftermarket filter setups (for performance) to their Z with success? I've done a search and couldn't find anything. Mine's an L28 with standard SUs.

I've got those egg shaped RAMFLO sponge filters with the chrome wire mesh holding them in place. I just like the fact it gives me more room.

the individual ones look awesome, but if you're after performance, the stock airbox is supposed to be fantastic. you can get a K&N filter to replace the stock one

or you can get individual k&N air fitlers from somewhere, i bought my old ones from gavin ages ago.....

 

but best is stock box, with new air filter, no hot air getting in....

Or a setup like you'll see at the concourse - lot of guys running individual pods, but inside a sealed airbox with a duct to the front of the car to pick up cold air.....

 

The temperature of the air going in is just as important as the amount going in.

FWIW, after the replies from this forum and researching other sites and speaking with people in the know, I've decided to stick with the stock box and a k&n or unifilter. Seems there is a strong body of opinion against going away from the stock box because open type units dwraw too much hot air unless you fabricate a cold air intake etc. which I'm not keen on doing at this stage.

i recently could have lost my 240z because of the air filters.

 

when i bought it it came with 2 trumpets and sponge uni filter covers.

 

i was playing around with it as it wasnt running properly fuel problems plus greatly out of tune. it backfired. and before u know it i had a 60cm flame coming out of the left side of the engine.thank god the car was stationary and bonnet up. so i was quick on the hose to put it out, i saved the car but filter are almost dont exsist.

 

they looked cool but can prove to be fire danger also.

ill probably leave the trumpets now as it looks insane. as the car wont be daily driver ill probably use fine stainless mesh inside the trumpets like the blitz sus and hks metal filters.

 

but for everyday driving ill will stick with the original air box with decent filter safer and u get better performance.only prob i dont have one.

yelloz, My 1980 L28 has a K&N pod filter which is succesfuly fitted if that helps.

 

Also just wondering what the legalities (is that a word) are with pod filters. i have heard different things from different people. First of all that they are just illegal full stop and also that you can either have a pod filter or an intercooler and the pod filter has to be boxed off. My 280zx came with a K&N pod filter mounted infront of the radiator (where the stock one goes i think) so it is completely away from the engine. The car is from NSW so i need to get a RWC for it... Do you think i should put the stock air filter on for the RWC or is how its set up legal, and would insurance (3rd party fire and theft) cover my car with the pod filter as is.
