It is with great sadness that I pass on this news about WarrenZ.

I only just sent out an email last night to a few people advising of his condition, when I received an email this morning from his lovely wife Kay advising that Warren passed away on Friday 18th September in a Palliative Care unit in Broadmedows, Melbourne. :(

He was surrounded buy his family. He was 58.

Warren was diagnosed with Advanced Melanoma 10 weeks ago & the speed at which it took hold was frightening... :'(

There will be a funereal in Adelaide, & a memorial service in Melbourne in the coming weeks.

Yes shocking news. Sad to see such a lovely gentle man go in such a way. My condolences to Kay and the rest of the family. I think maybe we should name the Bi-annual Thredbo Trip after Warren since he and Kay had such a great time only last February. RIP big fella.  :'(

I must say I'm very sad to hear this news. Warren was 1 of the first guys to show up at our first meeting in 2004 in his Silver 240z. Always friendly and enthusiastic.

Here are some shots of his Z at the first ever meet.

Here is a picture of Warren when he went to Japan.

Rest in Peace....

Maybe the next cruise should be dedicated to warren.

Ben

I think that would be a great idea.

I'm sorry to everyone that has received this information so suddenly.

I found out he was undergoing treatment when I caught up with him & Kay at the John Mott sprint in July.

At the time I did not feel obliged too make his illness more public, though in later weeks I should have been more vigilant in staying in contact with them.

For anyone wishing to send a personal email of condolences to Kay, I have her email address.

Feel free to PM me for it.

So sad to read the news. Rest In Peace big fella.

Both I and Nicole will really miss Warren. He was a very passionate and dedicated friend and Auszcar member. I used to pop past his place to try out different carb jets as Warren and Kay live just a few blocks away, he was always keen to help out.

We just arrived back in the country and it's been a week since I have checked e-mails or this site so I just found out.

I also recieved an e-mail from Warrens lovely wife Kay who advised she will keep us up to date on any plans made for a service in Melbourne as most of Warrens family is from Adelaide and I beleive the funeral will be held there.

I also knew Warren was undergoing treatment as I called him before our last meeting just before we left for our honeymoon however it is still a shock as one always keeps that hope that there will be a bounce back after treatment and later you can catch up have a beer and laugh about good times. Sad to think it will not be the case.

Yes I remeber this day Gav, I say that with a smile on my face it was a good day.

I thought it would be a good idea to do a feature artical on Warrens life and his 240z as he pretty much got it the way he wanted it before he past and he restored a very tasteful 240z. I'll talk to Kay about it as I'd want her to read anything we put up before hand as she may have some suggestions.

Goodbye my Friend,

Sulio and Nicole

Hi Guys,

As Warrens funeral was held in Adelaide Warrens wife Kay thought it appropriate to hold a BBQ in memory of Warren for the Auszcar guys. Warrens son, Craig, will be in Melbourne for the BBQ. He lives in SA and has inherited Warrens restored 240z, so it will be a good chance for him to meet some Z guys.

The BBQ will be held along the river at Footscray Park starting at 11:00am on Saturday 17th of October( *edit moved to Sunday 18th October). There is ample parking along the river and a large under cover area with BBQ's. Food and soft drinks will be provided.

I will post some maps up in the coming days so everyone is clear on location.

Please refer to the thread below and advise if you think you can make it so we can work out how much food we need to organise:

Hi Guys,

I've attached a copy of the artical that will be our next featured car. We thought it would be a good idea to get Warrens 240Z up with some detail's on his past cars and comments from those that knew him. This artical will be posted in our Featured Cars section when Gavin is back from Syria.

Warren John Halliday's 1973 240Z

I’ve actually lost track of how long Auszcar has been running , I do however remember our first official meeting back in summer of 2004. This was the first time I met Warren John Halliday.

A silver 240z had turned up and a tall fella got out and introduced himself quietly as Warren.

We all moved from car to car opening bonnets and checking out interiors. Warren was quietly inquisitive, keen to see what the other members of our small but eager group had driven to the meet in.

From that first meeting it was clear to me that this was a man that had a pretty clear idea of what he wanted from his Z, but had a humble and warm quality of listening to anybody that had an opinion on the Datsun Z car and it’s quirky traits. It was a good day and I imagine Warren enjoyed himself as much as I did.

We unfortunately lost Warren unexpectedly in September of this year. Everyone in the club is very saddened at Warren’s passing and wish Kay, Craig and Amy all the very best.

In the years that followed I met Nicole, my now beautiful wife and we bought a house just around the corner from Warren and Kay in Kensington.

Since that first Summer meeting some years had passed and Warren had started on some body work patiently preparing his 240z for the panel shop where it would receive an original shade of silver. Luckily Warren owned a 350z so when the 240 was shipped off to the panel shop, his withdrawal symptoms of not having an old Z in the  “Z Shed” must have been somewhat “reduced”!?

The 240z was at the shop for many months (keeping the cost low)  but I bet it was worth it as it returned shiny and new ready for interior work that was next on Warren’s list.

There was some focus on the engine to get it running smooth playing around with the distributor. Next Warren, installed a set of reconditioned triple DHLA40 Dellorto carbs, later getting them fine tuned by Maureci Motors - a family business largely dedicated to racing Alfa’s.

As you can see from the images Warren put a lot of time and effort into restoring what became a great example of a clean and classic looking 240z.

The specification of Warrens 240z are;

Year of  Manufacture: 5/1973

Model: 240Z

Body Style: Coupe

Colour: Silver

Transmission: 5 speed

Torque: 146 ft lb @ 4400 (approx)

Brakes: Disc front, drum rear , servo assisted

Suspension: KYB Macpherson struts , Pedders springs, Nolathane bushes

Wheels: Rota RB16x7 front, 16x8 rear

Tyres: Toyo Proxes R1R 205/55/16 front, 225/50/16 rear

Interior Modifications: JVC CD stereo, Autotechnica wood 13” steering wheel , centre console

Exterior Modifications: Wheels , Tyres , Mirrors

Warren didn’t always own a Z, in fact his first car was a Mini! A funny choice for such a tall guy, but nevertheless a classic. From there Warren bought a 1971 Datsun 1600, which had bits such as spotlights and bulbar black rimmed wide wheels and even a stereo (luxury and style for the 70’s). As a member of the Austin 7 car club in Adelaide he went on car club runs and took the Datsun around Adelaide International Raceway on speed runs.

Cars certainly didn’t define Warren, they just added another dimension to what was his very full and happy life. After asking a club and family members, here are some of the words people used to describe Warren:

“I met Warren at one of our quaterly Z Car meetings. He was a quiet unassuming fella who always took the time to listen to everyone’s opinion on what they had done to there car. I dare say he was taking it all in and evaluating what was a good idea and what was not. Warren often contributed to these conversations with thoughtful ideas with out going over the top like some of us do. My fondest memory of Warren was when we traveled to Thredbo for our 4 day adventure. I was struck by what a kind, gentle person he was despite his tall stature. He also showed a lot of attention to his lovely wife Kay. Something you don’t often see in marriages which have done a few miles. But they held hands on there walk up towards Mt Kosiosko and seemed genuinely close. Something I envy and am sure many married couples would. Having said this it would make Warren’s loss to Kay and family even more devastating. I can only hope they look back at the many fond memories they have had together and hope that over time the pain fades to pleasant smiles as he is remembered.”

  Craig Lovegrove

“I first met Warren during an early get together of AusZcar (around 2006), at which time he was having his Zed painted. I found him to be affable & reserved  when discussing Zeds, yet he had a strong passion for the cars that clearly came through. I enjoyed his company on the - all to few - occasions we caught up. He will be sadly missed – for someone that still had more to experience & to give. R.I.P. my tall friend.”

                                                                                                                                                                  Lochlan (Lurch) Fowler

“Warren was a true gentlemen – humble, intelligent, caring and someone who will inspire me to always remember what life is about.

Despite having a big job and I’m sure the demands that come with it, Warren never seemed to waste precious time worrying about it. It was obvious from the happiness in his eyes and ever present smile on his face, Warren spent his time where it counted; with the people he loved – namely his soulmate Kay, and working on things that he was passionate and curious about  – usually his car. It is so very sad that this time was so short. Sulio and I feel privileged to have known Warren and hope as time passes Warren’s family will be smiling again.”

                                                                                                                                                                  Nicole Mustedanagic

Warrens cherished 240z has now been passed on to his son Craig who resides in South Australia. We hope to see more of him around the site and hopefully club meets from time to time.

We will be having a BBQ in memory of Warren this coming Sunday, October 18th from 11am at Jenson’s Reserve in Maribrynong (Off Meyers Rd - on the River, opposite Footscray & Edgewater Cricket Club Ground).
