This style of car Mike. Idea is to build it with my father for some fun/frustration/experience/knowledge and road register it for weekend runs around Sydney's twisties and club track days. Basically a road registered go-kart. :)

Cheers Lurch. I figure the 240 will not sell all that quickly so it will give me some time to go and meet some builders and owners of registered clubbies. Some have already offered to give me a ride and hopefully I'll get a drive soon as well. It looks like I'll go with a 4AGE but there's always the S2000 engine (F20C) begging to be built. It produces 245hp which at a total weight of 630 odd kg will make the clubbie a damn sight more scary than my 240. :D I'm pretty sane right?

This is the kit I'm looking at. They're out of VIC and the kit is a copy of the Westfields which are very popular world wide. My preliminary budget comes to a few cents under $30k which in reality means about $40k.

http://img2.netcarshow.com/Caterham-R500_2009_800x600_wallpaper_02.jpg is the image its ment to be

the setup the company you posted a youtube link to who do the inboard horizontal susspension sounds interesting, even if its just coz you coudln't do that on many other cars! IRS is another thing which only some kits have yeah? going with the orginal width or one you can actully near fit in would be another tough decision...

what engine are you thinking of going with? (just saw you'd replied in the time i wrote this - last time i talked to my bro about it he was saying tou can't build 4age ones anymore due to emissions?)

i hope to one day convince my brother and dad to buy one, but i do question if i should just get one now or not...alot

4AGE's are getting tougher to pass (especially in NSW) but they are still passing them. I've made sure of that and besides, a kit seller wouldn't let you build one if they knew it could not pass. They actually help out a bit throughout the process from what I've seen.

People are starting to use the 1ZZ and 2ZZ engines. A few F20C's which are becoming popular as the half cuts start to pop up and there are some bike engines used as well.

Don't let all that hard work go down the drain. Awesome car.

I see too many people do up Zeds, run low on cash towards the end of the project and give it away. I was in the same boat but am glad I hung onto mine. To all you Zed people get out there drive your car and enjoy it. don't keep it in the garage needing work all the time otherwise you will lose interest.

Just some advise from an old Zedman who needs some company on these drives.

George's reply ;D

too true. i often thought of selling mine when it was running rough. now that it's all good and driving often i wouldn't dream of selling.

tidy looking car. need bigger pics.

Found this in another post ;)

So does this mean I have to keep it? :(

Today I went for a drive in a clubbie. Had no windscreen so I got bashed about by the wind. Had no roof so I got a bit sunburnt. Had very little room so I was squashed and stiff when I got out. Had an old stock 4A-GE that felt like my dads car on the straight. But when we got to the twisties and the sign was saying 55km/h and we were doing somewhere over 100 I first shat myself and then relaxed with a grin as I felt the car grip the road like a fat kid gripping a chocolate. These things are a drivers car. Me like. Me want.

George, you just have to be patient and the right buyer will find it. Try my105.com you may have a good chance there.

Oh, buy this months RACE magazine with a pic of a V8 Escort on the cover, has an article called "clubbie corner" and they chat about the bad CD figure of these cars. Apparently a Hummer H2 has a better drag co-efficent! He builds his own streamlined body and it looks awesome..

To be honest I think your car, as fantastic as it is, appeals to a very very small market, but nonetheless a market. Owners should never view these cars as a financial investment, particularly modified cars. People buying Zeds are prodominantly Gen Ys with limited finance, or old farts like me trying to relive our youth. The older guys are either cashed up and want what they had, or dreamed of having, i.e an original 240Z, or, are skilled (stupid!) enough to buy something in need of restoration and/or suitable for modification - just for something to do. Either way it's an emotional purchase for them. The financial downturn even has these old blokes nervous about self-indulgent exercises.

I have friends who have spent years building Cobras or restoring imported Mustangs and they sell them, at a loss, within two years of completion because they much prefer building them than driving them. My V8 project owes my >$23k and it's still on the rotisserie! - but I love it. I know I will never recoup the cost but I don't care.

I don't know what it might cost you but I would suggest you try a Shannons auction with a reserve price. It will let you know the going market price. A Toyota powered V8 with GTO kit went for $36k a couple of years ago. To reiterate, don't dispare, there is a market but it's very small and I wish you the best.

PS. I have 16" rims and I'm in 'The Shire' if you are interested. Geoff knows me.

Thanks all. I'll put it on my105 tonight and I'll check out the cost for the Shannons auctions. That's a good idea Peter. I guess I'm a little antsy to sell it before I change my mind and also because I want to get started with my clubman project.

Thanks for the offer for the rims. I'm going to try some other 15's for now and see if I can get away with it. Would love to check out your project some day if you don't mind a young punk coming over. :D

Here is a South Australian publication which carries plenty of Clubman technical articles - https://customkitcarmagazine.com/. It was available at newsagents but now only by direct purchase. I have all the issues so you can check them out when you drop around.

You sound like a 'doer' and I fully understand your desire to move on and your interest in Clubmans. I'm even thinking of a GT40 and I've still got 3 years to go on this one!

thats awesome! i love your short recap of your experiance in a lotus 7, made me smile george, how r are ya if you're calling yourself a "young punk"? lol

u could try putting your zed up on a clubman site and seeing if some of them want to be sensible and swap? :D i think 40g is quite reasonable, but then i'm not a potential buyer!

I have been quietly looking at Z's (240z's in particular) for a couple of months now.

Although I view the forums a lot -  I have not actually posted before, but believe as an outsider (not yet owning a Z), can probably provide some further insight into this particular area.

I have to agree with some of the comments made already. The market for a customised 240z is limited.

Like someone mentioned, you have the old guys - who probably enjoying fixing and restoring more than they do driving (too much time on their hands!), then you have the young punks with no cash looking for the fastest way to wrap themselves around a pole.  Cheapest way to do that is in rubbish like an Evo/Galant or R32/R33 - which are available everywhere and offer great bang for buck.

Absolutely agree that they provide no style or class like a 240z, but never the less - cash strapped kiddies are buying them in droves (buggered if I know how they afford to insure them...that's another discussion tho).

I fall into another category - middle age (34), have some cash put aside, know what I want and have a missus telling me how much I can spend (great).  There are some awesome Z's out there - no doubt.  Catch is - customising a car is a very personal and individual thing.  Not everyone shares the same vision, so when you spend so much time, love and money on a car to reach your personal goal - not everyone appreciates the outcome in the same way.  I see great customized Z's out there for sale with some mod's I love.  However when I look at some of the cars as a "whole", often would be paying for mods I just do not need or in some cases, do not like.

Point being - the more you mod a car, the more you reduce your market to sell it.  The more you spend changing it, the more you will lose in money and market interest.  You gotta find the "right" buyer now - one that likes what you have done enough to pay the price you are asking -which will take time (and luck)..

PS - there was no hidden agenda in this opinion! I am looking for a Z, but a V8 240z is too crazy for me!  Awesome, but crazy. ; )
