removing rear panels to get to the speakers in a 260zx

Hi,

I own a z32 300zx and am helping a 260zx owner install speakers.

I just need some info on removing the plastic panels in the boot to get to the speakers. it seems to be impossible to get to the speakers. i tried to get them out by removing the plastic bit that runs along the back and wigling the side peices around but was too woried that i would break them if i tried to move them any more.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat I assume you mean 260z and not 260zx since there was no such thing.

The plastic panels are a pain to remove without breaking the little clips that hold them in. Add to that the age of these parts and they literally split apart when you try to pry them out with a screw driver.

The good news is you can get these clips relatively cheap, infact I see them on ebay alot try www.ebay.com and search globally. $10 buys a pack of 15 or so.

The original style 260Z and 240Z trim clips have a plastic rod up the middle that, once inserted, expands the locking claws to hold the trim in place. To get the clips out, the rod is driven further into the body of the clip using a fine drift until it literally falls out - and usually gets lost in the process :( The original clips have a rounded head and the rod looks literally like a molding defect once its flush with the rest of the clip head.

I agree that buying aftermarket replacement clips is probably a better idea (and cheaper) unless you absolutely must have that original finish.

i got the rear long peice out that runs across the back of the car with those clips. i unscrewed the side panels wich had all but 1 screw in each missing.

these are the panels i need help with. i try and lever them out from under the gas struts that are there for when you open the boot but i can't seem to get them out.
