Wax,s 260z 2+2 long term build

Recommended Posts

OK well here is my thread of my 260 build up

It was going to be an rb30det but looking around i see they are getting big power out of the l28 turbos

so i have decided to stay period for the car

I brought it off a fellow member here and it seems to be in reasonable condition.

Got a few areas IE under the dash that i need to fix the rust in but nothing to major

I am sure the owner before me didn't know about that so its all good

Anyway I don't have much room in my garage at the moment on account of jetskis and other toys in the way so i decided i would start on the engine at work

Mainly the manifolds

Its common knowlodge that a plenum should be about 1.5x engine cc which means my one should be 4.2 litres

Its not hard to look at the stock injection manifold and see that its no where near that.

So out comes the alloy cut off saw and we have this.

This is what the manifold will look like when i weld it back together

Of course it will have all the holes filled and the casting cleaned up

When its all cleaned up and run over witht he cardtridge roll i will take it and get it sand blastered

I want to have the sane cast look on the whole manifold so it looks like an aftermarket system

That picture doesnt make it that clear but i will have it welded up soon and it will make it clearer

I have the exhaust flanges off being cut by the waterjet guys  and i will start my exhaust manifold as soon as i have finished the intake

Ok well got in there with the porting tools

when i started i couldnt fit a 32mm ball bearing down there now i can roll a 35mm one straight down there

I also cleaned out the short turn alot so that its a more direct flow

Im very happy with the result

the pictures dont show it as well as it should, but you get the idea

I have started to clean up around the outside of the manifold , the casting marks will all come off then i will take it down and get it sandblasted to give it that sand cast look again. My goal is to make it look like an aftermarket  manifold and not a hand fab job

The flash off the camera takes awy from my porting work, i will try and get some better ones tomorrow

Ok having a look around i saw some other manifolds other people had made and i like the way they flowed them into the front cylinder.

I could see a shortcoming on my first design

So i changed it a bit today, I think it will look alot better and should flow alot more as well.

Of course it needs to be welded up and its just held together with tape at the moment.

Hopefully i will get it tacked together on wednesday and then will make the plates to over all other holes. Should be excellent when finshed

Its seems a fair way off the front on the throttle body

But i see your design and its further. Im not getting to stressed about it , The flow is going to be far better than the orginal and since its going tbe force feed i think it will flow enough to reach my goal of 300 to 350 whp

Thahks for the comments

Well got the manifold all tacked up today and have to blend the old body in to the new plenum

Then its a case of welding it all up and making a top and bottom plate and then manifold is finished

On the bottom plate i will weld a thicker plate so i can put in the map sensor and vacum fittings

I spent some time today polishing the rocker cover

Its my first time doing this sort of thing but i am happy with how it came out

This is my first time polishing and there are a couple of mistakes but not to bad

The engine is off being hotanked at the moment and should be ready tomorrow

then its new welsh plugs and time to start preparing the crank etc for the engine

I used a sander with 240 on it then to 320 then to 400

then i used a buffing wheel with a hard cutting compound

Then autosoul on it , and it came up like that

there is a few marks i need to cut out of it still

Im going to redo it a bit better

But for my first time i am happy

I was in the process of doing something similar on mine, but it had some indents on it from people banging stuff into it like spanners and screw drivers.

Suggest wearing a respitory mask if anyone is sanding their valve cover. Alloy dust is not good for your lungs.

How did you get in between the nook and crannies? I found it a pain in the backside.
