Removing half shafts/stub axles from R200

Recommended Posts

OK don't burn me straight away.

I have not found a definitive answer on removing these sorts of shafts from the diff center. Most info is regarding the uni joint type shafts but these have a lot of play in them and if i clamp the diff center and just start tugging the shafts they will just extend then retract etc? Will I damage the ball or CV or what ever is under those boots if I do it this way??

This diff is on ebay by the way.

Two pinch bars between the half-shaft & Diff casing, then push back & the shafts will pop out :)

What he said - one on either side of the shaft, and away you go.  They're just held in by a little spring-loaded ring (snap ring) on the end of the shaft splines (inside the diff), you need to give it a bit of brute force to get the ring to be closed up by the splines in the diff centre.  once you get it the first half inch or so out, they should just about fall out!

And yes, conceivably you could damage the cv joint if you try and pull the shaft out from the end - not so much by the force you're using, but if the circlip that holds the CV together lets go before the snap ring in the diff squeezes shut, you could end up with lots of cv balls rolling around the floor, and they go walkabout very easily.
