biggels240z
Hey guys ive been doing some research on disc brake upgrades and have comes accross a few different options like the volvo disc brakes does anyone here run them and if so are you happy with them. I ve recently had a few experiences of running out of brakes especially on the way up to mount baw baw and i really dont want that to happend again, i know my brake fluid is a little out of date but i dont think you can ever have to much in the way of brakes. What do people recommend with out having to do to much modifications considering im running 15" wheels?
nat0_240_chevZ
good quality pads, first and foremost, good fluid, good ventillation and also some good Qual drum shoes too. you can race on stock Z brakes, for how long is the Q but it is doable and would not be outdone on the street without a punnishment. otherwise go spend big bucks on stuff you dont even really need, got some good stock ones before swapping it all out, and remember its not that $$$ to do. nat0
C.A.R.
Rich, what Nato said is VERY true. I run Ferodo DS2500 pads & Elf HTX115 Dot4 Mineral fluid, and I have NEVER had an issue with losing my brakes - esp. at Phillip Island & in Tasse. And I push my brakes to the limit... The simplest upgrade if you really do what to go bigger, is the late model Hilux 4spot calliper (use 'My00' WRX pads!) & mildly modded S13 rotor. 260Coupe
Biggles As the guys have said, stock Z brakes can be made to work very well without major expense and the necessity to go to vented discs and big callipers. Secondly the down side of the cast iron Hilux callipers is the huge increase in unsprung weight which is what you want to avoid. Firstly measure your front discs- if undersize or marginal get some fresh discs up front Try this combo New DBA slotted rotors (not vented ,slotting helps prevent pad glazing and you can retain your stock callipers) Braided brake lines front and rear (keeps the pedal firm and stops the old rubber lines expanding under hard braking Good quality Dot4+ fluid (Castol in the Silver bottle ) Lucas pads (sourced from Lou Mondello) - a little dusty but excellent stopping with little fade and very inexpensive I ran this combo in my Sc 240 race car it it was good for 10+ laps around P.I whith no issues I know have this on my road Zed and have not had a problem either in stop start traffic or punting hard. You also avoid any brake bias issues that may result from going vented up front and you can retain the stock wheels. cheers Alan
Scando
New DBA slotted rotors (not vented ,slotting helps prevent pad glazing and you can retain your stock callipers) I'm a bit cautious about slotted rotors now. Just pulled a set off the front of my car and both rotors had massive cracks and every crack started from one of the slots. Probably unlikely to get hot enough to do this on a road car but be warned. It's the first time it's happened to me but not the first time I've seen it happen. As the guys above have said good pads make a big difference. I was running EBC Yellow pads which I thought were supposed to be good but I was still getting fade. Switched to a more expensive pad and it solved the problem. They also last three times as long which means it works out cheaper anyway.

Scando
What pads have you switched to? I can't say at the moment sorry. The guy that put me onto them runs in the Australian Sports Sedan championship. They're what he runs in his car and he said none of the guys he runs against know about them yet and he'd like to keep it that way for as long as possible. So I'm sworn to secrecy until everybody else finds out how good they are sorry. They cost $800 for a full set front and rear and are absolutly useless cold so I don't think they would be any good for the applications that most people on this forum use their cars for anyway.
