Nuts and Bolts and Rubbers - All New

Hi Everyone,

So I've been wondering, if you want to replace all the old nuts and bolts on your Zcar with brand new ones when restoring your Z what can you do?

 

Does anyone know of a place or places you could get an entire kit to suit the Z? When the time comes eventually I'd like to replace many of the older rusted / sad looking ones you find on most Zeds.

 

Failing that, perhaps we could start a list of where to find certain parts that are equivelant from other places.

 

I know that many people have had luck at places like Clark rubber when it comes to certain rubber grommets etc..

Hiya Gav,

 

There is a nuts, bolts and washers store near my house and i go directly there when I'm after any remotely related to a bolt, nut or washer.

 

Usually i just go their with a sample, tell them how many i want. I've seen the rip off prices on eBay by reddat.  But its only the Higher grade bolts that start to cost. I'm going there this weekend to pick up a batch of common bolts that I've compiled from dismantling the Zed.

 

OH also the fender install kit that 240hoke, i can pretty much replicate all those bolts and even get the nutsert tool there. The problem with 240hoke's set is that the nutsert tool, the bolt to use it, is too short and can easily ruin the thread of the bolt. So i went to the store with little hope of getting a replacement, turns out he asks me, do you want the same one? and i got a slightly longer one, got 5 for 2 bucks, just in case i ruined them again.

 

When you walk in, the shopfront isn't huge, but you can see the shopback and its like a library of just bolts, nuts and washers.

 

I will get the store name on the way home today.

If anyone needs the use of a nutsert tool, I have one here. I work at a bolt place where we sell all types of nutserts. There are alloy, stainless and plain zinc steel. Stainless are a tad expensive, almost a $1 each! The hard bolt to replace on the zed is the one holding the front guards along where the bonnet is (low profile head). I've been looking through our stock for those with no luck. I found low profile head allen head cap screws and that's it! Its handy being here, whith my conversion I've needed alot of bolts to put everything together...whatever I need (high tensile that is...), at the end of the day just go through and pick what I need! sweeet...

if u want genuine replacements you either get it of another z or buy new from nissan. though very expensive. depending on bolt and type you could be paying up to $20 per bolt.

 

i used mob called Universal Fasteners. i think the National Company. though they have all the high tensile and correct thread but the head design is non automotive. though i used hex head stainless steel to bolt my guards and all other visible bolts.

 

also Repco , supercheap, sprints autobarn have a selection of fairly good automotive fasteners but they are bit pricey.

 

as for rubber i think clarks is good and there is another mob in victoria that specialises in old automotive rubber. i did stumble accross it at one stage.

 

IF in Adelaide or SA guys at Fitch The Rubber man has good selection to do most of your car.

 

Also some specialised rubbers can be still purchased from nissan for a reasonable price. like the rubber diffuser near the top of the doors.and window frame.

It depends on how bad they are. If it is only surface rust, you can throw them all in a bucket and take them to a place that does zinc plating. They through them in a acid bath, then re-plate them. They come out looking like new, and you will only pay about $40 for a bucket full.

the place i go to get bolts is called "coventry fastners" sorry about the late reply.

 

I'm thinking about finding those hex (alans key) bolts in the screw sizes for the zed and go crazy with them in the engine bay.

Yeah, I would be avoiding genuine Nissan. Cost me around $8 for a bolt for my rocker cover on my U12 the other week!

 

As for Auto rubbers, there is a bloke in Vic, can't remember his name, that makes rubbers etc. for Z's. Found a complete set of rubbers for the rear hatch and doors from him at the Bendigo swap meet.

 

Edit: Just remembered the place is called Bill Thompson Auto Rubbers. You can order from the website.

 

Sorry for a bit of a grave dig, but thought it would be worthwhile putting this up in case anyone else is looking for some.

i think going to one of the local shops mentioned is the best bet, but i do recall seeing someone selling bolt kits on ebay in the US. They had small kits for certain sections or general large kits, that's all the info i've got sorry

Specialty fastners here in Canberra (Fyshwick) has had every fastner I have ever needed and oh so cheap.  When I got all 24 dome head hex bolts, washers and nuts for my flares and the nutserts and drill bit, it cost me around $12 all up...  All stainless too.  At Supersheet/Ripco, if they had anything I needed, I was looking at around $5 a back of 4 bolts......Plus they didnt have every thing I needed..

im not sure, jsut did a search but couldn't find anything. I'm pretty sure all this guy did was get all the bolts you need for a certain job of the car ie. body then go down to a fastener shop and buy them and then sell them as a kit. Maybe if someone does that they could list the sizes and quantity here? i will do it when i get my project car back together but i dont think that will be for years...

This thread looks like a great idea and I hereby revive it.

 

I assume that this US eBay listing is from the seller that Sushi recalled;

Note that everything is said to be -

"- GRADE 18-8, TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL"

and I assume should therefore be used with an appropriate

jointing compound such as 'Duralac' to counteract galvanic action

between the stainless nuts/bolts and the steel of the car?

 

As Sushi mentioned they have full kits and sub-kits, eg.;

 

Full 240, 260, 280Z DATSUN FASTENER KITS

- TOTAL OF 1,836 PCS US$500 + US$43 postage

 

As you can see in the pic below - each kit is sorted into groups such

as 'Lower alternator bracket' fasteners and supplied in individually

labelled plastic bags.

 

I am tempted to buy a full kit because;

 

- They look nice

- They should remain looking nice

- They would be corrosion resistant, and with jointing compound hopefully no seized nuts in the future (no puns please)

- They would serve as a checklist as to what has been removed/replaced/fixed etc.

- The old fasteners could be put back into the appropriate labelled bag for eternal storage/reference

 

I have done a search or two to see what people in the US think of them - and the only caveat I recall

was not to use them on the radiator fan (higher strength bolts were recommended).

:(  Bad luck your in Ireland Gav. Have quite a few left over from my resto , they've been re plated to.You could have had them for free. I'll put them up on the free list shortly fella's. Just want postage cost. Off for holiday now will put on free list next week when I get back. Plus some other items I have for sale.

;)  Fella's be wary of stnls steel bolts. If over tightened they snap off ,also even if torque tghtnd they have a tendency to snap off with constant vibration. Other thing is they don't come in speed nut type do they ?.

What about using stainless nuts and washers on the inlet and exhaust manifolds as these are particularly prone to rusting? There are a couple of issues here:

-will stainless nuts have a tensile strength high enough for this application?

-will there be a galvanic reaction between the zinc dichromate plated inlet/exhaust studs, the alloy intake manifold or steel exhaust manifold, with the stainless nuts/washers?

 

Thoughts on this? Cheers. :)

I missed out on my nuts! :) I could have got them sent to my old folks place. But good to know they went to a good home all the same. I don't currently need them.

 

However I would like to see if others have found suitable replacements.

 

@Gongz that kit looks the business, did you end up ordering it?

Hi Gavin,

 

I still have them on my wishlist of parts, but the lack of response here, Alan's comments above, and the scarcity of  user reviews, has made me re-consider the stainless steel kit.

 

I still like the idea of using them as a  checklist.

 

If you search for charger440rt's items on eBay (USA) you will see that you could buy all of the partial kits for the same total price as the full kit. In other words, there would be no cost penalty in trying one area such as the engine bay first (apart from some extra postage costs I suppose). This is my current preference.
