Help With Correct Offset For Watanabes

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i am looking to replace my 260 style wheels with original option Watanabes

Looking at the original Nissan racing catalogues, you could get the 8 spoke watanabes in a number of sizes

i think it was a catalogue that gav scanned in

i'm happy with this width - 5.5 ( size of the 260 rims) and 6 j14, but i'd like to know the correct offset for these as the 14 " watanabes were made for a bunch of jap cars, including the toyota a86 of the era

i believe the correct offset is 0 for the standard wheel size

Where do you want your wheel/tyres to sit?

As a comparison, I run 15x7 0 offset with 205/60 tyres and they sit nicely inside the standard guard with no scrubbing.

If you want the original look ie central in the wheel house, with standard width wheels then go with the standard offset.

To nit pick... they were actually Kobe Seiko 8 spokes.

An easy mistake to make... but the Sports Option Catalog actually is showing these parts.

The official watanabe website lists their recommended offsets and wheel sizes here: http://www.rs-watanabe.co.jp/matching/nissan/

Also worth looking at the customer image gallery. Scroll down to the S30 section. If you click on a particular car you can see further photographs with details regarding the rim and tyre combo in use. See here: http://www.rs-watanabe.co.jp/category/userphoto/nissan/

I personally want to try 15x8 0 offset all 4 corners (114.3 PCD obviously). Fill out the stock guards nicely (may require a little edging - not that kind) and trimming to make sure it doesn't foul on the front valance section.

But just found this car and what a stunner with the "Gotti" style wheels.

I have also used 15x8 +4 offset with 225/45/15s with no probs. I have replaced them with 225/50/15 r888r tyres but still to test fit. Hopefully ok too ????

get your eyeballs into this .

i though the seiko wheels were only for the rally cars

No just a specific style of Kobe Seiko wheel was used on Rally cars and available for PS30-SB or Z432-Rs both of which were not available for purchase by Joe Public.

Joe Public was happy to get given the narrow version on the regular PS30. ????

Reading Jap is like saying can anyone read Oz lol...

Can you let me know how you go with those? I've just purchased some 15 x 8 +0's with 225/50's on them and I'm hoping they'll fit, otherwise I'll be looking for new tyres.

Unfortunately I got scrubbing.

As well as the new tyres, I also recently put adjustable lower control arms on and have -2.5’ camber on the back and -3.5’ on the front. This pushes the top of the tyre out a little too which doesn’t help.

I will roll the lip on all my guards a smidgen which should sort it out.

I’ll get some pics when I get a chance.

18x8 -2mm using 240/640/18 slicks, the front guards had the lips cut and flared with pipe.

rear guards were rolled and suzuki 4wd fibreglass flares stuck on. Inner guards were "tubbed" by hitting with a big hammer to get some more room.

Going to a 15x8 wheel with a 225/55/15 tyre you will be an inch or so less in height than the 18 inch slicks I ran so you should have a bit more clearance to the guards if your ride height isn't stupid low like my race car was.

But it will also depend on the car, 40 years will see things not square and bent out of shape, plus manufacturing tolerances 40 years ago were pretty ordinary.

Yeah I think the 225/50/15 are about 610mm diameter so yours would be just over 1/2” tighter than mine.

I figure with a little tweaking of the lip, things will be fine.

What sort of caster did you run in the front? I’ve got 3’ and it’s as far as I can go before hitting the front valance.

It sounds like you did some body work to suit though.
