Gtv240z
I have a 73 240z and curious to know which original radio would have been installed at the factory... Most 73 models in the US (internet search) don't have the antenna switch. And my antenna switch is mounted under the centre panel next to the fuse box which I don't think is standard. My guess is a previous owner mounted it there when fitting an after market stereo. Any insight into what I should have had would be great! Administrators gav240z Posted December 9, 2017 Administrators Share Posted December 9, 2017 All AU market cars had the TM-1081ZB(s) AM radio. The bad news is they are the most expensive radio to buy often selling for $800 USD+ on eBay. I have lots of photos showing cars in Australia fitted with this unit until the changes in 74 with the 260z. I believe the parts Catalog shows the 8 track player as found in home market cars. But I doubt anyone ordered it back in the day. cracker and Gtv240z
Six_Shooter
I haven't seen a US radio without an antenna switch. It was usually mounted in the same face as the radio, above the right knob (tuning). Gtv240z
gilltech
The '73 240Z and both versions of the '74 260Z owners' handbooks I have show a AM/FM push-button radio, all 3 show the chrome knob aerial switch (horizontal movement L/R) above the right knob as per Six-Shooter's post above. However, the '78 260Z owner's handbook I have shows an option of AM-only radio, AM/FM radio or stereo tape player. Unlike the other two, the AM-only radio has the black 'vertical' style aerial switch to the right of the RH knob. But in any case both aerial switch types are mounted within the radio faceplate to answer the OP's question. I don't know if there was a 'radio delete' option at all, like was available on Mustangs in the USA for example, HS-30H is bound to know. And who knows what dealers originally fitted and subsequent owners have fitted over the years. I forgot to add that the faceplates are different between 240Z and 260Z due to the different console designs. Administrators gav240z Posted December 11, 2017 Administrators Share Posted December 11, 2017 Here is some magazine articles on 240z's etc.. https://goo.gl/photos/yGt15kkjKMxXx6Sb8 You can see the AM radio in a 73 delivered 240z. Pfft, as if you need Alan (HS30-H) to tell you that. 68835-E4100 was described as a radio mask aperture and was a blanking plate/storage box. Here is the AU parts manual page. Presumably you could order a 240z without it at the dealer, just like you could forego the clock (blanking plate like Z432-R) and probably power antenna or for that matter order defrost glass (as I've seen a few AU market cars with the vertical line glass, so I assume they must have optioned it) but I'd say very few actually did that. Here is a page from the AU parts manual showing Rally Clock (Option) with 8-Track radio etc.. but I've yet to see an AU market car that had the Rally Clock or 8 Track radio optioned from the dealer.. Administrators gav240z Posted December 11, 2017 Administrators Share Posted December 11, 2017 Actually Alan did give me more information about the DIN pocket here. (Photos of what it looks like also attached).http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/14558-the-ebay-thread-2-post-ebay-parts-here/?p=160681 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/14558-the-ebay-thread-2-post-ebay-parts-here/?p=161010 Gav, It's nothing to do with the 432 or 432-R.432 was technically 'Deluxe' spec, so they all had radios/8-track radios as standard spec.'PZR' 432-R was technically 'Standard' spec so had no radio as stock equipment, same as Fairlady Z-S ('S30-S'). The Z-S had blanking plates over clock aperture, centre dash vent and radio aperture, but on the 432-R the clock aperture and eyeball vent holes were not even cut in the dash covering vinyl. The Z-S & PZR radio aperture blanking plate was flat not pocketed. Please remember that pretty much every 432-R sold to the general public was unique. The spec on small details like this was rather loose, to say the least. Some of them were made with heater/defrosters, some not. Some of them were made with gloveboxes and lids, some not. Some made with glovebox lids but no 'box' inside. The flat panel on Takeuchi san's 432-R radio aperture may or may not be original (there are a few things on his car which are like that...) and only one or two 432-Rs had choke and hand throttle controls relocated from the (missing) console to the dash area. It was all personal preference, and often modified by the supplying dealer.I've got one of the 68835-E4100 DIN bins (I'm rich...! Or maybe not... ) and you won't find it in any of the early Japanese market parts lists despite that 'E41' suffix indicating 1970 S30-specific parts. Best I can figure is that it was a rare option for music haters with short arms and deep pockets... Gtv240z and d3c0y
Administrators gav240z Posted December 11, 2017 Administrators Share Posted December 11, 2017 By the way Craig, I have a couple of spare TM-1081ZB(S) radio's. I am willing to sell (plan was to restore and sell) if you decide you want 1 let me know? I had someone else ask about buying 1 recently and I went to the effort of pulling it out and taking photos of issues with this 1. https://photos.app.goo.gl/B8scQYsdc429gUYk1 They haven't come back to me, but it got damaged because the seller was an idiot who didn't package right in transit. Chassis is bent (could be hammer / dollied right) and a piece of PCB chipped off a corner. It seems to still work but ideally you'd repair this section as you can see part of the circuit on it. I said to him I'd sell it around $350 USD as is. Willing to trade for other rare nostrums Gtv240z
gilltech
Ha! Well there you go. Good info! Cheers Gav (and Alan). I've seen a couple of 8-tracks in Zeds in NZ and they looked 'right' with respect to the faceplates but never knew if they were original equipment or not. But NZ has got such a mix of Zeds from various different markets and parts get swapped around so it's hard to know what is original to what. The rear screen demister must have been an option on 240s and 260s in NZ cars at least as some have it and some don't; (mine doesn't but the wiring is there). Dumb not to have it in a wet climate but then NZ-new cars were always historically expensive due to government taxes so cars like mine were typically fairly spartan when it came to the equipment and option list. 72240Z
Sorry I misunderstood your'e first post I thought you meant it was mounted to the console next to the fuse panel.
Gtv240z
Just thought I'd d post this up as an option for people wanting that original radio look.... Reproduction radio face plate and knobs can be bought from the US from 240zrubbers (thank gav for putting me onto this) This was a bit expensive at $275 delivered but at least everything is in new condition. I then bought a 280z hitachi radio which was US$22 buy it now... But works out to $AU$75 delivered. I already had the aerial switch so just need to attach it to the radio and mount it up.. I have a Parrot Mk9100 phone kit in the zed which has ipod connected, screen hidden just under the dash and wireless remote control rolling around in centre console tray so I have fully functioning phone and stereo but with old school radio look. I pulled this out of the wife car which came with it when we bought it, as i upgraded it to a sat nav unit I am going to wipe off the 'fm' on the buttons for a slightly more genuine look. At first glance everything looks legit but on closer inspection the gurus will pick this imposter! This was about a $350 exercise, quite expensive for what it is but much cheaper than a genuine original , it also has fm so you can actually listen to music if you wanted to...
