Howdy
Hey Lurch, I used those MaxSpeeding rods in my FJ but did have to resize them to be perfect (which I budgeted for anyway as they apparently size the rod with different bolts installed) plus I filed a piston oilier groove in the big end. So far (touch wood) they have held up to a 10000 rpm miss shift, and plenty mumbo. I too was nervous about using them, especially when the box had a slightly different logo to the rods - read MaXpeeding vs MaxSpeeding but they seemed to be a nicely made rod. I forgot about them until you reminded me.
C.A.R.
Not a lot to report currently. Block has been acid washed & is due to be bored in the coming weeks. Head is at HSD being brought back to life - will also be a few weeks away as it had to be re-heat treated. One new part has arrived though - the clutch: It's a Jim Berry item: 200mm dia. 3200lbs clamp PP, & the last one in existence - Sachs pressure plate. It will be up to the job of my expected torque output. I'm mounting it to a lightened 200mm L20b flywheel - hence the small dia. C.A.R.
Good things take time.My E31 head finally arrived back from HSD on Friday, having had some serious work done...Any corrosion of the coolant galleries were welded up. The injector notches, EFi manifold mounting holes & a couple of the rocker cover bolt holes that were damaged were also welded up. The biggest significant change is that the 'squish' area in the chambers has been welded up, so Les can design & cut a new chamber, to improve cylinder burn.Following this the head was straightened. After all this was done, it went out for heat treating to return the head to original hardness - the welding process softens the Aluminium alloy. The hardening leaves the head looking stained with the brownish colour.Following that, the cylinder face was lightly milled. Next, Les will take to it - porting the runners & re-shaping the chambers. Stay tuned. Edited October 21, 2017 by Lurch ™ gav240z, KatoKid, scott and 1 other
mossy
Isn't welding the chambers something Les would usually do, or was it just easier for HSD while they were doing the other welding work?

C.A.R.
The pistons have arrived! Colin from Special Piston Services: http://www.specialpistonservices.com/has produced another beautiful set of pistons: Pistons are 86.45mm dia. 1.2mm top ring, 1.5mm second ring. 21mm gudgeon pin.Les specified a flat top piston for my build, to bring the static CR to 11:1 with the suitable modified chamber in the E31 head. 600Z
That's not as much as I was sort of expecting, the VW Mahle pistons would end up being close on $1200.

C.A.R.
Fark! 18 months! Time for an update! Nothing has actually happened in the last 18 months, other than I got distracted by my own business getting very busy and poor Les having some health issues - thankfully he is now on the mend. Over the new year break I linished the crankcase of my block & painted it in Glyptol to help seal the crankcase and improve oil drain-back. Next the each piston gets measured so the block can be torque-plate honed to each piston size. C.A.R.
While I was working on my block, Les was busy doing what he does best - Porting! I'm using my original E31 casting cylinder head, which has been repaired along with getting the chambers welded up. I like to see 100hp/litre so Les took a deep breath and had it at. Pictures speak a thousand words: Next the head goes to http://www.woodyshydroblast.com/ to be made to look new again, afterwhich it's off to http://www.headstuddevelopment.com/home.aspx to have the seats re-cut. Finally Les will flow bench it to see what it flows.................................. The L24 crankcase is the same as the L28, so with the appropriate milling on the block a 90mm stroke crank could be made to fit. d3c0y

Huw
Would love to hear if any updates on this as I hope in coming years to be refreshing the l24 in my zed. Has been rebuilt 10 years ago but left stock at that point. Now thinking about doing more rather than drop an l28 in.
C.A.R.
I'm saving up the required $ to finish it - I'll update this thread as it happens.
