Awesome work Jeff, good to hear the old shell is being saved as well. Keep at it. What other damage did the other early shell have?

Thanks. The other early shell was Mossy's first 240Z (There is an old build thread on it). It had some damage to the drivers side footwell/firewall area - creased impact type damage and the rear wheel arch's on the rear quarters had been butchered for old style moulded flared guards. Nothing too bad. Mossy had already put new floors in and done most of the slam panel repair. The guy who got it from me was a panel beater by trade who had a very rusty 240Z and he planned to use his rusty one for the bits to sort Mossy's one out.

Thanks John, Coming from a guy with as much experience as you have that means a lot. It is a lot of work and I find it hard to stay motivated. The feedback from other members is really good for keeping the motivation going.

 

I was so motivated that tonight I ducked out to the shed and quickly sorted the underside of the floor out!!!!!

No seriously, I started prepping the underside of the floor about Mar 15 and finally painted it late Sep 15. I had a bit of paint left in the jar so I painted a few loose parts that I had already sandblasted and were ready to go.

Next I had to finish up the rear inner wheel arch areas left and right as I didn't do them when I did the floor (That was a big enough job as it was).

Well this build has now caught up with real time now, so the updates will be slower to come in the future. The car is finally out of the roti, makes it a lot easier to move around the shed now on it's wheeled trolley. The rear quarter has been taken back to bare metal and is being prepped for primer.

I have been trying to decide on either getting the car professionally painted or painting it myself. I got a quote a few weeks ago and I am leaning towards getting it done professionally. The workshop I have been talking with wants the car delivered to them completely back to bare metal, this will save me some money. So over the last few weeks I have been madly trying to strip all the paint from the car.

So far I have found one small dent in the roof on the passenger side, a previous repair to the rh front guard and some small rust in the passenger door. Not to bad all in all.

The dent in the roof should be easy enough to repair, the doors look amazing and the skins would be worth saving. Apart from that front end stack looks like it was a really well kept example. Lucky you!

Thanks for all the "likes" and encouragement, it certainly helps the motivation to keep going. The dent in the roof will be easy to sort, it was just bogged previously. I was pretty happy with the overall condition of the body so far. All in all it is very good for a 46 year old car. In 240Z terms this one is almost "rust free".

Yeah that's right Gav. Personally I don't rate 907 green very highly. I can't explain it, I just don't like it. I have seen a few cars painted 907 that I quite like - the green hornet for instance, but I don't think I will be doing the car in 907 even though I like the idea of keeping cars in original delivered colour.

Interesting, I too am not a fan of Green cars.

Back when I was younger (80's) Just every time a mate had a green car it ended up getting written off.

So for me - Green is unlucky

personally if I was doing all the work you are doing, I'd stick with the original colour.

 

I've never been a fan of green, but after seeing Green Hornet and a few others that had the right wheels and stance, changed my opinion. 907 is almost British racing green.

Thanks for the input everyone. They are all nice cars in there own right. However since I have had this car (10yrs) I have always had one colour in mind. I have swayed from this colour occasionally but I always come back to it.

I love 918 Kalahari Tan, so you can't go wrong there.

 

In terms of blue I like the factory blue as seen on Kats car. (So glad we didn't get the door buzzers here).

Yeah I like the blues as well. Another car I really like is this car that was featured on petrolicious. I am not 100% sure of the colour code for this one though.

It's your car Jeff so go with what you want.

 

For my 2c worth I'm with Gav, my vote is for the original 907 green, with black wheels only though, it'll make the factory chrome and stainless really pop!

 

Hi Gareth. You are absolutely right - it's my car and I can paint it any colour I like. There are a lot of factors involved in the colour decision though I suppose. For instance as the value of these cars is increasing I find the effort of my build is increasing as well. I never meant to invest this much time and effort into this car, like most of us I wanted to get it driving as soon as possible. I wanted to hillclimb it and track it and the big clause was to not invest to much money in it. Well my mindset has changed some what as the values have increased. I find myself thinking about future value of the car and how the choices I make throughout the build will affect that. Not that I am looking to sell the car anytime soon, I just find that I cannot ignore the future financial side of things now that these cars are starting to be worth considerable money.

 

As for wheels. I already have a set of 16x8 zero offset wantanabe wheels - alloy spoke with polished lip (thanks to Mossy).

Tough decision to make but it seems like you've already made it... 10 years ago. ;)

 

Yep, absolutely right George, bring on 918 orange. I can't see why 918 orange would make the car worth less in the future than 907 green.

I'm sorry that asking about the original colour has caused all this fuss. I just assumed it was originally blue from all the photos I saw until I saw the interior colour. It's good to know what colour it was originally for the record as it helps us determine what other cars around the same build number should/could have been originally. It's all part of the puzzle. :)

 

I think sticking to the original colour palette is a safe option. I can also totally relate to the increasing value of these cars swaying your decision. Remember I originally wanted to build a rat rod out of HS30 00150 but that's of course somewhat changed now. My 72 240z was going to get flares and big wheels etc.. Now it's slowly going more and more original.

 

I'm sure whatever you decide in the end will be great.

No fuss at all Gav. I was just thinking out loud. I have an ability to change my mind about things like colour multiple times a day. Having said that I have always known deep down I would paint it orange just now I lean more towards 918 orange for originality.

 

It is always interesting to hear other people's opinions.
