4. Emoticons still broken... Not sure why yet.

Fixed.

To do list.

1. URL rewrites for map old URLs to new board.
2. Update page titles and meta tags for SEO purposes.
3. Fix Emoticons (low priority for now)
4. Migrate latest snapshot of site.
5. Delete duplicate images stores in gallery folders (over-inflating storage usage on server).
6. Retire old software.

1. URL rewrites - done.
2. Page titles sorted, meta tags will sort out after launch.
3. Emoticons fixed.

4,5,6 will be done maybe Friday / Saturday night (after 12pm) since that's the site's off peak period. Actually Thursday morning around 3am is the least busy time for the site, but I don't think I'll be staying up that late to do it.  :-X

I have a quick question re: members who may have joined but not actually posted yet.

Before I migrate to the new software I have an opportunity to delete all user accounts where posts = 0. This will remove a lot of spammers who joined via automated scripts but were blocked from posting due to various checks in place that prevent users from posting right away without passing a few turing tests.

There is 1 dilemna no matter how well I craft the SQL query (database query) I'm sure a couple of legitimate sign ups will get wiped, removed, deleted etc..

Worst case scenario they will need to re-register and join again.

Just wondering how many of you registered, and didn't post for a long time before finally introducing yourself?

I know that some members join up to send PMs and may not have any actual posts yet.

The main motivation behind this is just clean up the members database and get a more 'accurate' count of actual members. We don't have 10,000 members. Probably closer to 2000 - 3000.

Why don't you just delete all members with 0 posts with registration date older than X? 2 to 3 months?

There might be some legitimate ones but even if there are Gav, I'm sure they will understand since we're migrating.

Yeah I'm in 2 minds about it, because the new database has no way of determining if they have validated their email or not. I can always clean the records up after the migration also.

There might be some plugin's or tools for better member registration management in the new software also.

Damn spammers!

Well ran a few queries and cleared out quite a lot of spammers. Down to just over 4000 members which seems more realistic.

*Edit had a look through the database so there is still some spammers but no table column I can use to differentiate between legit and spam users in those cases.

The new software will have better spam prevention in place so that will help stop it once we move to the new site. I can clean it up after that further.

As the subject says, just a heads up going to put the forum offline while I attempt to move to the new software. If everything goes well we will be on the new software in the morning. if it doesn't, well... we will be still running the old software.

Wish me luck!

Yeah everything went well except for the last 3% of attachments, it appears between the last migration I did and this 1 a dud file has been uploaded that is causing a problem. I could have gone ahead anyway but would have missed some of the latest attachments and thought I'd get this sorted then try again.

Hi Everyone,

Well I think we are there, up and running on the new software. I'd love your feedback, since I'm heading to bed now and I feel there is probably something still broken. I will check emails in the morning.

Hopefully the site is working as it was before? There will be some getting used to how everything is set out and works so let me know what is and isn't working for you?

I still have the old software and database on the server as a just in case things go pear shaped...So there's always that.

Cheers,

Gavin

Gav,
When you get really really comfortable, and familiar with something, it's a "second nature" thing.
This new page layout, is gonna take a fair bit to get used to,,,where are the list f "recent posts" that used to appear at the bottom?

I have nfi about the back f scenes machinations about software, but what was wrong with what everyone could see up front?
Ie if it aint broke, dont fix it!

Gav,

Looks great.  Good job.

It might be worth making a post that shows where the features of the old forums are located in the new forum (like the New Content section).

Also, When I click on a Forum section from the home page of the Forum site (like General Discussions) I was still going to the right URL but the site homepage's content.  I did a forced refresh (in Chrome hold Shift and click the reload button) and it fixed it.

Cheers,

Matt
