Mystery 71 240z. This was a car that was parted out to save another car.

1 owner car from Cassino NSW that had been T boned. It had later pillar vents, E88 cylinder head, storage bins, fender mirrors, a 71A  gearbox and choke/hand throttle set up.

So it would have been a 71 model. Does anyone know the car or what number it might have been?

I heard about this one when I was working up at Lismore about 5 years ago with some guys from Casino as they knew I was into Z cars

I was told about 7 years ago it was owned by a lady and was totalled in the Main Street in Casino and was then put on a transport and sent to Newcastle to be auctioned by the insurance company

Here is an interesting car. HS30 00879 also known as TKS33 SA 3640

Kevin Bristow's ex-Works 1971 Datsun 240Z rally car

With engine: L24 039427

http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/32332-works-rally-240z-resto-featured-in-octane-magazine/

Article on it here:

http://www.autotraderclassics.com/car-article/King+of+the+RAC+_+Datsun+240Z+rally+car+restoration-55346.xhtml

I bought Octane magazine years ago when living in Europe and I was sure I brought it back with me, but now I can't find it anywhere! So looks like i'll have to get another copy.

If memory serves correct this car didn't have the Safari cylinder head (part no. 11041-E4621), rather it was a highly modified E30 head?

Check out those megaphones!

Any idea on where the photos were taken Gav? Casino is only an hour away from where I am.

This information sounds about right.

The photos of the wreck were taken at a workshop in Cardiff (near Newcastle).

After the car was written off it was sent to the NRMA salvage auction at Gateshead near Newcastle.

Seems a shame now, but 15 years ago it probably wasn't worth repairing...

It was Safari Gold and was in Sydney.

Just updated the first page, but a minor observation. I had to increase the number of images allowed per post from 100 > 150. So that means we have roughly 100 cars accounted for of the first 1000 roughly.... Give or take a few that we have details of but no photos and some we know about but no longer exist etc.. So not an exact count.

However that indicates that there is roughly 10% of the original 70/71 cars left.

I know it's a small sample size, but if we assume that there was 3000-3500 240z's imported here in the 70s (provided that figure is accurate) and if we apply the same survival rate to the lot.. That would mean approx. 300-350 are left.

Thanks to Sydney Mike, I now have info on 233 and 236.

Here is the eBay description for 233 (Comic Sans for the win!)

DATSUN 240Z 1971 MAN 5SPD

Here is your chance to own a peace of motoring history.

I have For Sale my Datsun 240Z 1971. It is build number 233 and has the matching engine since new. This car is in excellent condition for it's age and will no doubt be a collectable and could be worth a lot of money in the near future due to it's low build number and matching engine, something that is getting very hard to find in a 240Z these days.

Not only is it a low build number, but the car is totally rust free. It has been garaged and rarely driven for the last 17 years (approx 2,000 kms). The car has 11 months rego and 15" Simmons B45 Style rims with brand new tyres. I have just put new carpets all the way through the car and have recently serviced the car with new plugs, leads, fuel filter, oil and filter and during which I also fitted a brand new gearbox and diff mount. The car was fitted with brand new shock a few years back and the engine was also refreshed and runs well.

The body of the car is exceptional. The car was resprayed 17 years ago and is very straight for its age. It has NO RUST AT ALL and the doors, hatch and bonnet all shut with ease and the paint is still very shinny for its age. The body lines up very well and all factory trim parts are present .Other than the wheels (of which I still have available the factory 14" steel wheels with good tyres as part of this sale), the car is completely original boasting the original stereo and even the factory clock still works.

The interior is tidy with the seats in excellent condition and new carpet. A fussy buyer might want to fit a few minor interior peaces which would certainly add to its original appeal. The Dash has the standard although minor imperfections but overall the interior is tidy for it's age.

Now for the bad points. The original 240Z SU's might need a tune to allow the car to run to its full potential, it currently runs very well, but with a tune would be smoother. The rear end probably needs new universals in the tail/drive shafts as there is a little bit of play under load, but there are no whines or other concerning noises. The Brakes, Clutch and gearbox seem to be in good working order although 5th gear does jump out only sometimes, but I don't use 5th all that often anyway. Once again, for the fussy owner the paint on the roof of the car may need a respray as it has deteriorated a little over the last few years, but this is an easy and relatively inexpensive job.

If you are the successful purchaser, then I can help with any transport requirements anywhere in Australia at your expense.

Please Note: the ZED 240 Number plates will not be sold with the vehicle and if its a NSW buyer I will provide Premium plates for the vehicle.

Please feel free to ask any questions about the car that you might have.

The car is advertised elsewhere so this auction might end at any time.

Interior pictures added (new carpet wasn't installed at the time of these pictures being taken, but it still shows you the interior is very tidy)

I have dropped the price as I want to sell this car.

I now have over 83 people watching this auction so get it while you can.

If you need any further information or photo's please don't hesitate to contact me

and 236

HS30 00145 has been added (photos that is) we already had the chassis ID. I recall the person who owned it on Classiczcars.com a few years ago. Looks like a really nice example too!

Thanks to Sydney Mike who kept records of it and the eBay description.

Hey Gavin hows the database/register set up coming along, as the first page is getting pretty dam big?

It looks great and i always check out your latest updates when you do them

I've been so busy collecting the info I haven't had much time to dedicate toward the database, but I agree it's getting a bit unmanageable as is. I wanted to look at it over Christmas but that didn't happen due to family commitments, will have to get creative with it (finding time that is).

Hi mate,

I've just added HS30 00894, but if you go look at the way this car is included you'll notice it has a link to an album, this is actually easy enough to do. What I am currently thinking is all the cars I've collected so far can be documented with their specifications in a regular CSV file (like a spreadsheet) and I'll maybe have relational sheets for owners details and history etc..

The images can be stored locally in the gallery, each album will be given the name of the chassis ID and when I get a chance I'll figure out how to integrate the gallery and csv data into a custom module for this site. So that basically the register is part of the site. However the good thing about storing the data in a CSV is that it should be easy enough to transport it and join it with the new database when ready. The good thing about this approach is we can work out what fields / schema we want i advance before writing anything permanent.

Still there is much manual work in maintaining it, but it's my hope that members will eventually be able to contribute information with the need for me. So we can open it up to later S30Z's like 260z's and 2+2s etc..

That was a long winded way of saying currently all the images are hosted on my own Google Photos account, but I plan to move them to Auszcar's native gallery function.

I'm definitely not a person to ask about databases and there set up. The only thing i would hate to see is that it get to a stage where all becomes to hard for you and it falls over.

If you can get it to a stage or process which you think is the easiest then go for it, i always reckon KISS is the best answer, i am sure many of the owners of the early cars will want to add there own info and pictures and the holes can be filled in by you or whoever might have the info.

I like the simple set up of 0894 would be easy to scroll through a big page with that kind of set up and look at what might catch your eye. Is there any chance of having a rectangle format picture rather than the square?
