250 GTO for auction - no reserve

Recommended Posts

No, it isn't mine.

As most exchange hands through private sales with reported prices on $32m-$50m US, it will be very interesting to see what it actually reaches at public auction with no reserve.

It's a pity I've promised my daughter I'll watch her play netball that weekend otherwise I would be over there with my cheque book.

Possibly the most beautiful shape ever. After the S30Z of course :).

Will be interesting to see what it fetches.

Going straight home to look in my piggy bank for funds....

Weird variation in the vents on the nose cone ... three in the main pic., blocked out in the other pics and only two in the period racing picture... anyone know why??

I say go for it Pete!, saves you the effort of finishing your one off. Go to the auction early and tell everyone it's the wrong day or bomb scare or something  ;D

They are nice but I rate the perinnial favourite Lambo Miura and 250 SWB highly as well. But of course they don't hold a candle next to the S30!

I spotted a FG 240z GTO over the weekend on either e-bay or Gumtree.

There was a whole car but here the guy is selling the kit set.

Here it is here, $37k in WA

The 250GTOs were primarily designed to win Le Mans and race designers were just starting to get into aerodynamics at that time. The three upper intakes (and the three lower intakes) were a clever way of providing sufficient cooling to the radiator without a large grill. The cars were subsequently raced/rallied/hillclimbed/etc, at various European localities with cooler temperatures so the intakes were fitted with one, two or three covers depending on the conditions.

See here:

If he gets $37,000 for his car I might have to consider putting mine on the market...

David - That builder has completely buggered the look of that car with the rear wheels. Either the rear has been mounted too high or the car is not lowered enough, or the wheel/tyres need to be bigger - or any combination of these.

... Go to the auction early and tell everyone it's the wrong day or bomb scare or something  ...

I'll just take Todd Carney along with me!

My guess, $26mUS

If you look at the close up pic they are actually louvers you can open and shut. I didn't notice this before until you bought it up. You can see in the pic of the car racing it only has two open. Obviously a cooling/aero trade off so you can shut them for cool climates would be my guess.

My guess is $46,500,000

I'm guessing 57 Million. It is an investment after all. Why bother with art you hang on the wall, when you can own art that snarls and barks and makes the hair on your neck stand on edge?

For those who haven't read it.

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/01/18/barrett-jackson-2014-1967-chevrolet-corvette-l88-sells-3-million/

Just for comparison this is an L88 Corvette, went for nearly 4M

I guess this is the Corvette equivalent of the PZR (432-R) Fairlady Z - in terms of numbers produced and rarity.

  • 1 month later...

Just a reminder that this will be auctioned tomorrow around 10:00am AEST. Lot #3

'Brabham' (Alex) is over there and will be bidding on my behalf for the 250 GTO, and bidding himself on Sir Jack's BT-33 the next day.

You can follow the action live here - http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21917/live/

I sure will Peter, however I fear taking advantage of the no reserve price by starting with an offer of $20 and a rusty 2+2 may see me leaving the auction prematurely ;D! At least you have the next best thing with your car. Not sure I could handle owning an original, you'd be too scared to drive it and if you wrote it off no one would forgive you. The smart money is with the BT33, and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it if I had that sort of money. Some of the old F1 cars are really good value for something that quick. I think there is a McLaren M20 on the blocks too, that would be the pick of the bunch. Looking forward to the Can-Am goodness, wish Bernie would take a leaf out of their non-existent rulebook :)

Cheers
