Hi All
i had a look on the forum but can't find any info about how to identify z gearboxes.I picked up 2 boxes a couple of years ago from a wrecker i have checked the first gear ratio and both are 3.3,one had 260z in paint pen on it but i think that is incorrect.I need to replace the one i currently have in my z,and i want to rebuild on of these boxes ,i need to know what kit to order .Can anyone on Brisbane Northside have a look and suggest which kit i need.
Cheers David

What is in your Z atm?
The 240's came with the A type, which is longer and a 3 piece housing.
The 260's/280's Skylines bluebirds 240ks all came with B type, a two piece casing.
Except Mr/hr30's they had a Stumpy box still a 2 piece.

Yes a paint pen does not mean it is a proper 260 box.
Stew Wilkins Motorsport will sell you a bearings and seals kit, as well as other bits if needed.
If you have a parts numbers book, you can order direct from a Nissan dealer.
They are common bearings, you could take them to a decent local bearing shop and get matching new.

Or take the whole thing to a gearbox shop, peace of mind.
Most in Bris use,

Hi Jason and all
Thanks for the replies
My current box in the car is a 280zx the 2 other boxes i have on the garage floor both have a first gear ratio of 3.321:I presume that ratio is only found in 280zx models. So
Question 1 :Are these 280zx boxes i have in the floor
Question 2: Is this first gear ratio found in other gearboxes ie 260z/260z 2+2
Question 3 :Could they be from another model ie 240K,200b,skyline,etc
I want to rebuild the box myself so i need to know what kit to buy from SW Motorsport
Buy the way Jason do you have any R180 lsd centres?

How much is a typical Datsun L6 series box standard rebuild?

Hey David,

If its for competition you might want to look at a Kameari close ratio gear set, that would take a lot of the guess work out of it.
Also 240K boxes arent as strong internally as zed boxes from what i have been told. I had a 240K one and mine even had 260Z written on the top of it too.
The ratios for the boxes are listed on the forum from memory which should help too.

My bloke in Brisb, does the rebuilds, to factory spec ( backlashes, clearances etc, depending on what is reqd, FROM $550 up.
At $550 you get roller bearings, seals and labour.
The UP bit then becomes synchros, gears, dogs, selectors needle rollers, as they are required.

Sam, Les Collins is very very good, and knows them. You could try Needhams, Lou Mondello, some bloke called Stan ( fair few rally boys use him, incl Rob Devenish)

Zcar63
What you have on the floor are two very common boxes, out of a large number of models,
The 240k five speeds were just as strong as all other 5 speeds.
The strong 4 speed only was fitted also to some 240k's, the dirt rally lads like the four speeds.

The stronger casing is the "smooth" case extension housing, bit more supporting metal in the casting process, these were the proper 260z fitted box. Nissan seemed to mx and match lots of common things.

SWR should be able to supply a bearing and seal kit, no idea on price.
The blokes in Windsor could possibly supply, but they are gruff grumpy types, and would rather take on a whole job, they do wholesale trade work, but can look after "walk ins"

Put up some pics of the boxes on the floor, to confirm.

Some ZX boxes had a 3.0 or so first gear, some 620/720 trucks had a 3.6 first gear, 260Z's had a 2.9 first gear, but the outer casings were all the same smooth case style. Who knows? Untill you pull it apart!

Sorry no datsun r180 lsd. Chuck in a Subaru STI with the aftermarket outputs.
R go for a bit more common R200
There is one for sale on here in WA, road freight shouldnt be too exxy?
