Not to be appearing dodgy, but I really don't think anyone could tell that the rails have been modified once the seats are in. Also, unless they completely break up for some reason I don't see how insurance could try and void my claim for it. Anyway, this is something that I'll get Lurch or someone alike to fab up for me so I am 100% sure that it's up to and exceeding spec.

Very true, but in the unlikely and unfortunate that you are are involved in a crash resulting serious injury (or worse), even if it is not your fault, EVERYTHING about all vehicles involved could be called into question. In that scenario having your claim rejected could be the least of your worries.

Don't want to seem like a kill joy or stick in the mud, but seats and seat belts are serious.

Just my opinion  ;)

Agreed. If there is a serious crash your car will be inspected for faults by a forensic specialist. Therefore makes sense to play by the rules.

Dimitri is running velo seats in his Z. Made in AU so will be ADR approved I'd say. Worth looking into and not bad looking seats.

There are tons of them around... just really not sure if they're any good... I'd more than likely re trim them anyway.

I have found some fairly aesthetically worn recaro SR3's on fleabay for $300, so I'll have a look at them and if they are structurally fine I'll buy them and get them retrimmed. Otherwise, I looked at some S2000 seats today, which by the way are very decent for a sporty stock seat which was around $600 but had a bit of cracking, so I'd have to re-dye it (it's supposed to be black, but as i found out it's really a very, very dark grey. So I'd just redye it black to make sure it matches my interior).

I'm using r33 gtr seats in my 240. Put a set of recaros in a mates gtr and he have me these for $100! Just have to wait for this broken foot to heal and put them in  :-\

Compared to the Recaro bucket seats that came in limited edition FDs they are heavy. It's all relative to your expectations LOL...but I suspect not much heavier than stock 240z seats like you say.

Ah... my apologies Gav! I thought you were comparing to the 240z seats, not the fd recaros. Of course all things are relative, and for the price ($400ish) I'm happy with a weight equal to the stock seats, plus now I get lateral support, better construction and overall comfort for (especially) longer drives :)

If money were no object I'd be going with a set of recaros for sure...

They are quite a small seat so I think they will fit perfect in the s30. I'm over 6ft and they are super comfy.

Still pretty hard to find under $500 and seeing as though they don't come in leather I'd then have to add on reupholstering...

Woot, going to pick up some s2000 seats up tomorrow for $500. They aren't 100% perfect as they have a few leather cracks, but I
think I can repair them to look new without too much work. Strangely their "black" leather is more like a very dark grey, so a dyeing
may be on the cards to match the jet black of my interior.
