Hilux brakes - thoughts/comments

Hi Guys,

Got given some Hilux 4*4 calipers a while ago, and just what to know what sort of improvements I can expect, and if its worth the effort to fit them up.

Noticed in another thread sco_aus is running LN105 Hilux 4 piston, the ones I have are stamped S12+8 on one side & 57Y on the other, have I got the right ones!

At the moment I am running the bog standard disk & drum setup, which is fine for cruising but you need a firm right boot to slow the old girl down.  Esp noticeable when you get out of a modern car.  NB - calipers, disks, pads, fluid, drums where all checked etc in about March 07, car is 95% street use may get a couple of 1/4miles, hill climbs, track days in the years to come for a bit of fun but nothing to serious.

Oh yea, I assume this kit would work on the calipers I have, did you guys put a kit through the ones you used or just did you bolt them up.

Also have a 260z master brake cylinders (MBC) in the parts car, would there be any benefit in swapping it over as well, or wouldn't you bother unless there was something wrong with the existing one.  Out of interest is there a difference in the diamater of the 240z & 260z MBC.

Thanks

Dale

Ok.  Pros: 4 pistons, larger surface area gripping, firmer grip.

cons: 280zx(direct swap) or larger diameter master needed, little bit heavier than the stock callipers, harder to get performance pads for.

Perosnally, after driving down some steep hill climb areas with my brakes, i much prefered them over the stock ones.  I never got any fade and pulled up really well.  But without the 280 master, they were pretty spongy, infact i found the floor once when i locked up at a roundabout.

At the time my setup was: LN106 4 pot solid rotor version, DBA slotted rotors, performance pads (unknown brand).

Now: LN106 callipers, performance pads, DBA slotted rotors, 280zx master, braded lines, rear disk conversion. Ill let you know how it goes when i get the car back on the road.

Oh and yes you do have the correct callipers, but im unsure whether you have the solid rotor or vented rotor version.  The vented rotor version is a bit better in that if you want to you can convert to a vented rotor or just use a solid rotor.  Obviously you cant use a vented rotor in the solid version calliper.

Also, incase anyone is looking for Hilux callipers, do not buy them through Zed dealers who put a massive price increase on them, if you look on 4wd forums, i recently got a pair for $50 for ZD44TT from  www.4wdmonthly.com.au/forum

Its a shame it has to come to that too, they shoot themsleves in the foot with things like that.

i thought they'd be pretty easy to pick up eslewhere... they usually go for $150 on ebay when listed for the 240z. I just purchased a set from nicedat for $100. I think that's a fair price, not a bargain but not absurd either. But yeah i reckon you could get lucky at a wreckers for $50.

sco_aus: have you heard anything about the 2+2 booster? ive heard it is suitable for the conversion. And luckily the 2+2's are in abundance here so looks like ill be raiding my parts car soon :D

id sell you some for that price, as they only cost me 45$ from ebay delivered, with 95-98% pads.

EBC still do green syuff pads for the hilux calipers, however the now greenstuff is the best available except for firehawks ex US but much of a muchness.

i have solid version with 32 & 38mm pistons aswell as vented version with all 38mm pistons.

the smaller pisteon versions require less fluid in comparo to the 4x 38mm. meaning you can ge away with a 15/16' MC instead of the patrol 1"MC. dont try and use the 7/8" MC as this is will be spongy and almost dangerous as mentioned above.

I rebuilt my 280ZX master to 1" bore with plans to upgrade to 4 spots for the fronts in the future.

Currently trying to choose what to do though.

Aluminium Z32 with 296mm x 25mm rotors

Cast iron Z32 with 296mm x 30mm rotors

or

Hilux 250-280mm x 20mm rotors????????

With my setup (thanks to redrbz) I'm using the 15/16 master with the Porsche 928 S4 4 piston calipers with no problems and the best pedal I have felt in a zed. Discs are 330mm and the calipers are pretty big. If you got some spare cash, prices now for those calipers have come down to $470 each from $700, not sure on the discs yet, and Chris Wood can make the hats/brackets for the radial mounted calipers. Only down side is you have to use 17"; maybe can get away with 16" though. With everything you do on the zed, depends on the $$$

i wouldn't mind having porsche visible between the spokes :D, but i have to admit there is something about it saying nissan

Usually the porsche on the brembo calipers is an transfer so strip off and repaint the caliper then just add Nissan. I have some Porsche Boxster calipers (mono block radial mount) that I am going to fit to my zed when I arrange to get them shipped to NZ from the US.

The toy's are the best bold on solution for good performance - there are better options for performance ie larger rotors but then an adaptor is required then engineering certs etc with the toys and rotor that bolts on the back like the factory then most places would not know it is not factory. Have a look at the Toys with the new BMW Mini rotor and 260z front hubs = bore the centre of the rotor and redrill for 4 x 103mm that is used to mount the stock rotor on the 260z hub. The BMW rotor spec is 276mm x 22 with a 44mm total hat with a 64mm centre bore and 4 x 100mm PDC. The stock 260z rotor is 271.5mm by 12.5mm with a 43.5mm total hat with a 81mm centre bore and 4x 103mm PDC for the mounting at the rear of the 260z hub.

This is what I would do for a good road upgrade :)

With the Porsche name on the caliper, unfortunately its cast in the alloy! on the other side it has Brembo . You would have to machine it off the front... Wouldve been good to turn it around but that cant happen! The way I see it, who will notice when you are doing 180 kph down a main straight? Its not the easiest conversion to do unless you have your own engineering equipment handy...

Now you know what is funny here in NZ I have seen a number of race car use the Nissan/Sumitomo 300zx rears on the rear of escorts etc and they machine off the words Nissan so you can do the same to the porsche units. I know the ones that I have (monoblock) are a sticker type setup so I will be having that removed and I will put Datsun or Nissan on it

I was going to use those same porsche brakes but they are very heavy and over kill for my application so I have gone with the Boxster setup which only takes a 24mm rotor standard. The Boxster S take a 28mm rotor. However I have seen guys use the Boxster calipers on 26mm rotors and the Boxster S on a 30mm rotor. I will know more once I get them in my hands but the other reason I when for this setup is that the early porsches also have a 3.5" ear mounting spacing on the fronts and there are a number of places that make adaptor kits for mounting these boxster calipers on earlier porsches.

Does anyone know if the later toy calipers are still 3.5" mounting as I see the later toy 4x4 have a 28mm thick rotor.

digging up a kinda oldish thread i know, But, just got myself a set of Hilux vented calipers, and a complete R31 rear disc setup (thanks Sulio)

Now, for the master cylinder upgrade that is mentioned here, either the 280zx or 1" patrol one, whats going to be more appropriate? i would imagine it'd be the patrol one, being bigger.

are the MC mentioned here for just upgrading the front calipers? or is it taking into account the change to rear discs too?

Also, what rotor do you use on the front? I have a new pair of solid standard rotors, but i would prefer vented ones.

thanks fellaz ;D

Yeah, go the Patrol 1" or spend even more money and get the 280zx master rebored to 1"..

PBR make the 1" master JB1419, about $185 from Ripco.  I hope you guys deal with PBR at Autobarn, if you do, can you order 2 in and i'll grab the other one when i get payed next?

Like previously said though, it will cost about $60 to get the lines re plumbed to the exit points from the side of the MC, since the 240/260/280zx ones feed from the bottom.  I prefer it though, it will be easier to loosen and tighten them instead of going underneath the MC to reach it.

Whenever you change to discs at the rear, you have to change the master or remove the valve from the rear circuit of the standard 240/260 master cylinder. I've been using a 280ZX 15/16 cylinder with no problem at all, even with those big Porsche calipers. I can lock the front wheels too easily....

hmm, ok well my hilux callipers with rear disks are extremely spongy with standard MC, with the 15/16 with only hilux callipers i found it perfect for my style of driving, but with disks rear, i am upgrading to 1", however, I have long term plans for 6 pots, so this will save me having to do it all again later..

But yeh, I guess you SHOULDN'T have any dramas with 15/16 MC.

Still, can you order me one if you can please?

A bit of extra info regarding suitable pads for the Toyota calipers from 'Ben' in SA:

Bendix data is as follows:

90-96 4-Runner:

Forester/WRX/200SX/Z32/GTR:

Very interesting, especially when you look at the LN65 Hilux (non-vented):

It makes me wonder whether there is more compatibility there than meets the eye...
