Wanted: Diff Crossmember 240/260

Hi all.

I'm after the diff front crossmember (if that's what its called) that carries the front diff mount and locates the front pivot of the control arms. See photo

Mines a 240 but don't know if they are different for 260's or not?

Melbourne preferably!

Thanks.

David

Always the inquisitive one Lurch!

I'm going to run dual 2.25 inch exhaust front to back so I want another cross member to cut and shut with this one so that I have the same reliefs both sides of the diff for the exhaust clearance.

David – is this for aesthetics or practicality?

I kicked that idea around for some time but started to think I was designing around that cross-brace rather than other parameters and eventually found it wasn’t an issue. I could still use the OEM brace after I installed the GM diff (IIRC you’re using a Ford) and fitted the exhaust.

I will, if necessary for structural rigidity, design my own cross-brace and may run from frame rail to frame rail which means it could act as a tail-shaft safety strap as well. For me it was a bit like the transverse links (LCAs) they look too cheap to fit in with the rest of the build.

Do you have the diff and exhaust fitted?

(edit) I'm having trouble trying to remember all this but I think with the twin exhaust I had to clear the rear cross-brace behind the diff so it became the determining reference as to how high the exhaust could be mounted. If you are running your exhaust along the same path is there any point in tucking it up higher at the front of the diff if it has to pass lower at the rear?" (See two added photos)

Hi Peter.

Its more to satisfy the engineers that anything else and to secondarily to tie both sides together.

I'm still using an R200 with the classic RT mount using the Chev unbreakable transmission mount. Engineers may be uncomfortable if there is nothing there to support the nose of the diff if the "unbreakable" mount breaks so I'm going to use modified original cross members joined with some 5 mm strap which will give me more room for the exhaust.

And no, the exhaust is next on the list.

Yes Peter, going to run the exhaust same as you. While I may not need to tuck it up that high (as you correctly point out that the rear is lower) I still want to do this for symmetry's sake. Stupid I know, but hey that's the way I like it.

I know we have discussed before, but have you got any better pics of the Commodore resonator you used between the trans and diff? VE if I recall correctly? can you confirm pipe size and overall dimensions for me?

Thanks.

David

You want something done like this Dave. Old shot but you get the picture.

You go a single resonator and it won't go up into the tunnel high enough. You will need the clearance.

If I can't break the diff brace then I think you should be safe Dave.  ;)
