A long time coming but here is a few photos of the Legacy Machine or affectionately known as "Blue Steel" from humble beginnings to now. Pictures say a thousand words so I wont crap on about it. If you have an I-phone and you dont know you can download the  Targa app and see results from Targa High Country. Thanks to AUSZCAR forum and all of the members for their support. It took 7 Months!!

Wow 7month turn around and looks fantastic. What are the specs on the motor, driveline, suspension? The cage work looks very substantial.

Is that a custom diff mount with a control arm bush? Cheers, Gareth

I watched the Targa Tas dvd yesterday and saw a similar looking Z go into a ditch, then almost get hit by an out of shape Lambo  :o

Gareth - Yes that was this car, no damage - just long grass that I could have been pushed out of but my navigator has no legs - lucky it was a driver fault so I couldnt curse him;)

Tasy was just a learning experience for us and with the new engine with 55HP extra in prior to High Country we found ourselves competitive all of a sudden.

The L28 was built by our engine sponsor  - more of a combined effort with alot of internals coming from Stew Wilkinson and he did the head as well. Running some 45mm OER's and a new set of the Yodas Ceramic headers that will set you back 1K - pretty sexual looking things though! and a nice flange free exhaust by Jimmy at Liverpool exhaust who always helps us out

Its a very strong cage and good side bars as you can see, no chance of the front end flapping off either.

All of the  Custom stuff like the Diff mount was designed by the Yoda, fortunately we have a workshop where we can make it ourselves to cut costs.

R32 gearbox and R200 LSD, king springs and koni adjustables.

Glad to hear there was no damage, sounded really good while you were giving it the beans trying to reverse out  :D

I'm liking the diff mount, looks really well thought out an easy for maintenance/replacement!

Thanks John

Hopefully I get some interest and I will update regularly - depends on what people want to see I guess.

Would be great if everyone who reads this thread became fans of the car on its facebook page - nearly up to 200, would like to think i could get a thousand off here...

Looks nice. To get oil pressure after installing engine do you just pull the plugs and crank the starter? Does the oil go everywhere with the rocker cover off? Also do you need to squirt oil/fuel in the cylinders through the plug holes if the engine is new/has not run for a while. My engine has sat for years and I am wondering what I need to do before firing it up. Cheers. :)

There are many ways, and let me say I am no mechanic and usually am an assisting bystander.

Plugs out for sure and fuel off so you arent dumping fuel in the bore.

A towel helps and if you have poured that much oil and cranked it for that long that oil starts spilling out of head then you prob need to look at a different way to get oil pressure. You are just trying to keep lobes and lash pads lubed and hope the vas in the oil pump does the job.

There is the disy off and dissy shaft method until you get oil to flow from "all" Cam oil galleries.

There would be alot of gurus on here that could help - I know pretty much zero compared to most on here about these things.

That there is a big dollar motor - and anxiuos times when watching that process - if I had a clunker I might give it a crack myself...maybe

A set of 260z Hood Vents arrived today. Should do the job in the Carbon Fibre Bonnet when made.

Last Rally I had a massive heat soak issue with the new engine and higher temps than Tasy.

I have since also installed some heat shields to each Carb that you may be able to see in one of the last photos and a few other mods to come.

For about 1Km at the start of every Targa Stage it would run like a mule until cool air had flushed through the engine Bay, didnt help the cause obviously!

I am running a continuous flow like an EFI system from tank through fuel rail and back at 3 PSI so always nice cool fuel.

Cheers mate "Sexual_sushi" the car didnt get as much air time as one would like but hey we got the message across about the trust and thats all that matters I guess. Damiens the draw card there and anything on the side is always good.

For those who didnt see it the segment was aired on the 7PM Project on the 15th of December - that is the best way to search for it when on the projects website in past stories, check it out!!!!

The photo below is on the way to launceston from the spirit of tasmania about 7 days before the start of targa - about 12 hours later there was a massive failure of the engine!!

The big end bearing on this was starved of oil from a blocked oil gallery in the crank.

They think that the solution used in Nitriding left a small particle in the gallery and when heat and oil combine with this  it turns to a sludge - blocking oil flow, it definately looked like that apparently when the engine was pulled down.

So this happened the Sunday night a week before Targa starting this year in Launceston. I rang the owner of HM Gem Engines and he said to get the engine back to Melbourne and to his Dandenong plant. There were no available spots for a car back to melbourne on the ferry on the monday so we went on the wait list and the only ferry back with room was on the Thursday night. The mechanics pulled the engine out put it in the service vehicle and managed to get a spot from the wait list on the Monday night. Arrived 7am on the Tuesday morning and drove straight to Dandenong to pull it down - had 3 days to do it all and back on the ferry on the thursday night. We didnt have a balanced crank after this but we had an engine that was running so cant complain.

The engine went in on the Friday. Ran it in on the Saturday, did a track day on the Sunday and Scrutineering on the Monday - no sweat!!!

What a shame matey, there are some excellent machine shops and engine reco guy's in Launceston, and the NW Coast of Tas. I had a spare L28 bottom end here in Burnie and could of tracked you down several more in Launceston.

Yeah cheers, that would have cost me some dollars, you can appreciate it didnt cost anything to send back to melbourne to be redone.

Its good to know in the future though if I get stuck down there. Appreciate your offer.

Hi All

The Legacy Machine will be making an appearance this Thursday at Wakefield Park - thought I would let everyone know in case anyone was planning a track day soon. Would be good to meet some forum members in person.

Of course I need some moons to align but I reckon a 90% chance of getting there. Will post again if things start going not to plan Mon or Tue after some Dyno time.

Will keep you posted.

Today we fitted the hood vents, attached photos of some grinding and the fitted product.

Also one of the boys pressurising.... the fuek tank after we ran out of fuel on the dyno, its never failed to pick up before but this time it didnt want to play the game and pressurising worked.

Tommorow we will be bracing the new front spoiler and dropping some weight from the car - for example we have a 17Kg heavy duty Oddyssey Bty at the moment which will be replaced by a 2Kg battery. We dont take ourselves to seriously and Now that we are competitive with the new engine we will start looking at little things like this.

Venting inspection covers started today and that is messy business with an angle grinder and needless to say they will become a satin black now once I have finished removing metal from them.

Track day now on Wednesday if anyones heading down?

have some different rims to try with a shallower offset ugly looking things but will be interesting to see if any difference with a wider stance.

Here is the link to a video I put on youtube from the track day last week.

We achieved what we needed to in terms of the times we were after from completing some mods - and that was with a warped front disc ,average tyres and a slipping clutch - you would be able to hear it if youtube didnt stuff me around, sorry about the music but it suppressed original music and had to pick from their file and so it cut out the audio from the footage, I nearly gave up on it!!!

If link doesnt work search team legacy assist channel.
