Cleaning inlet manifolds
« on: July 03, 2011, 04:08:27 PM »
Hey lads
I scored a set of twin carbs of galderdi (Greg, again thanks bud)
Im in the process of cleaning it all up
Ive scrubbed em down with degreaser and a toothbrush
But the dirty oily marks in the alloy , AARRGH

Ive heard molasses is good paint stripper ,cleaner, but on alloy ???
Mate mentioned bicarb of soda ???
What do you guys use ???

Also what about polishing them ???

I blast all my manifolds/alloy bits with bicarb or if its really stuck i use Garnet!! If you have a compressor You can grab a cheap $50 dollar gun from Supercheap otherwise pay someone else to do it!!

I used the $50 supercheap gun like benny suggested and the bicarb works a treat on alloy, sand is just to harsh on soft metal.
Technology costs a money and a money we don't got.

I thought the wet n dry trick with autosol mite do
But the ruff cast finish is harder to clean than the machined edge of a wheel

Sweet!

I wonder if you push some molasses through the ports if it would be a good way to open them up a bit. (I am thinking more about an EFI manifold)

Greg, there is some goop that is designed to do just that, Jason has done it for his inlet manifold to even up the flow between runners and also open  it up a little.

Thanks for the info. I probably will never get around to it. I have way too many experiments already. Plus I am now going down the ITB path so the injection plenums aren't a priority for me any more....although I guess I'll still have one on my 280zx :)
