260Z 2+2 Starter Motor and Battery Earth Lead Wiring
« on: December 25, 2010, 09:22:09 PM »
Hi guys, does anyone have a pic of the wires that run to their starter motor in a 2+2 260Z? How do I wire it up? I am reassembling my engine bay and wondering how to wire up the starter motor and where the battery earth lead and battery positive lead connect to. Thanks guys and merry Christmas.

Thanks heaps Scoota, exactly what I was after. :)

So both the positive and the negative use that same kind of black wire with a yellow trace, the positive having a shield over it and running to the starter solenoid and the negative bolts to the transmission housing, is that correct? Also what are the two other wires for that run to the starter? Presumably one is for the charge/volts, what about the other? Thanks. :)

Yep that's right, as you see it in the pics. The other two wires should be bound together and one comes from the relay (big one near the Master Cylinder) and the small yellow and black one is for the ignition switch.

Installed :) :) :). Many thanks Scoota. And now I turn my attention to the alternator ;D

Would you have any pictures of the alternator wiring Scoota? Presumably again the 2 seater is the same as the 2+2? Also are you running an L26 or L28? Cheers and thanks for the help.

All good. Sorry can't help you with the Alternator as i run a 120amp Holden Item and the wiring is modified, but, it should be one plug a white wire the same thickness of the one that went to the starter and a Black one.

The back one goes to the body ot the alternator

The white one bolts onto the only stud sticking out of the alternator.

The plug is pretty simple.

See how you go, maybe someone else has a photo.

Thanks Scoota,
will try and get a pic as well from someone else just in case. Why did you decide to run the Holden alternator? Cheers.

I was running one i got off of evilbay and already had the mount modified to suit, an equivalent Nissan one was more expensive and the one in there now can have Bosch internals fitted to it.

Yes, thread revival.  I am at the same point now. :D

So in summary, positive from the battery terminal goes to the starter motor and negative terminal to the bellhousing. Is that it? Does there also need to be a connection from the chassis to the engine?  I wish I had taken more pics before disassembly.......

In the loom there should be a ground that goes to the block on the oil filter side near the alternator. Wire is black with a washer type terminal on the end. I'd add an extra earth anyway from the bellhousing to the chassis; you can never have too many earths!
