Auto paint from Ebay????? Expert opinions please.

I'm up to the stage now where I will need to buy some primer/filler and start painting sections of my car. The bonnet is nearly ready to do first.
There are paint places to go to where I live but I've heard the prices are quite 
Anyway, like all things I type away on ebay and up come these kits you can buy.
Now most people I know say to go 2 pack and I'm under the impression that means buying 2 pack primer as well as 2 pack paint.
These kits seem to have everything I would need and if you include the cost to get it to me (maybe $60?) do you think they would still come out cheaper than buying it locally? Or can anyone recommend how to go about setting up for a respray in 2 pack. I'm just going a standard white too. Like a new car white. No pearl or metallic.
Do you need to put a clear coat over 2 pack white. I thought the whole idea of 2 pack was it comes out glossy off the gun and didn't require a clear coat?

Tim I'm pretty sure you need a spray booth to paint 2 pak.

Why don't you get all the prep work done and get a professional to paint it.

Because you need to bake it? Or because of the fumes.
Apparently you can spray 2 pack in your back yard providing you only do two cars a year or something.
I hear you about the pro job.
I'd still like to work through and at least do the primer after getting each panel right.

Hi Tim,
          you can spray 2-pack in your garage, you just need to keep everything clean and invest in a good mask. I will be spraying my car in two pack in a garage. I just bought a 'Sundstrom' mask for around $100 with filters. I would probably advise going to a paint shop as they can give you advice on what you should use. If you are using a non-metallic color you should not have to use a clear. However if you use a metallic you will need to use a clear. You are going solid white so you should be able to spray and get a good gloss off the gun. However you will need a fairly decent compressor, put some moisture traps in your hose line. The paint is pretty expensive as I have found out. Trick is stick with one paint system rather than mixing brands and systems or it may ruin your paint. The color I have been told is around $70 liter and you may use 5-10 liters to do the whole car. Still beats paying upwards of 3K for a professional job and means you will be able to do it yourself. Talk to a few local auto paint shops. Also have a look at paint sites. A few good paint brands are De Beers, Glasurit, PPG, Octoral, Spies Hecker, House of Kolor. I will be going with either De Beers or Spies Hecker for my color. These two are at the cheaper end of the range but are still good paints - the price is good (high) too!

At the workshop day, Rev (and I have heard it from others too) recommend not to use 2-pak colour paint in your garage because it contains isocyanate which is very toxic.  A good mask may not help either, especially with neighbours, pets etc.

2-pak primer is ok because it does not have isocyanate, so you can do all your prep work safely at home.

I have heard that HiChem does an isocyanate-free 2-pak colour paint but I don't personally know of anyone who has used it and recommends it.

Still has to be more durable than Acrylic, heh?

gotta say,and take it in the heart it's said - if you spray 2 pac at home you're a goose! 1/ a $100 dual filter respirator is still like wrapping your laughing gear around and exhaust pipe and sucking down fumes for 20 minutes! while I agree that political correctness often sux, information of lung destroying chemicals is life giving...literally.  without a fullface, oxygenated mask and even full overalls you run the risk of severe damage, do it often enough and you'll be hiding your own easter eggs by the time you're fifty!  2/ If you're new to painting, the 2 pac method is much harder to get a consistent result, either because of the electrical charge that it sets up through the painting process you will pull that much dust into your finish or you'll have big enough runs for Molly Meldrum to hang his entire hat collection on!

Get it done by a pro or go Lacquer!

Although its just my opinion....oh and that of almost everyone else I know who paints outside of a booth!

When my mate sprays cars in the booth, they have random worksafe checks that they are wearing their resperators.
the rules are quite strict and fines apply, worksafe wouldn't do this for no reason.
2 pac paints are harmful to your health........... PERIOD
As brought up earlier, if spraying at home, its not just YOU getting the fumes in your lungs. What about your family and neighbours?
There are panelshops around that rent their booths out, doesn't cost much.
I can give details of one in Bayswater, Vic, for anyone interested.

There are a lot of unhealthy things out there in industry and the coorect personal protective equipment to suit.
In regards to respirators I have access to half or full face respirators with chemical cartridges already through work. As well as disposable overalls if required. And when I say I'd spray at home, I have basically noone living down wind of me except some wild animals so I have already thought about the inconvenience that I might cause.

I went into a paint place today and got two quotes. Plus a comment regarding the above "It's not as bad as people make out and there are no rules saying you can't do it"
 
To paint my car with acrylic I would need:
2L of primer filler = $42
4L of thinners = $26
2L of white acrylic paint = $98
Total = $184
This would require a substantial cut and polish obvioulsy.

The bloke there recommended due to the age of the car I should give it a good sand and seal it with an expoxy primer. He said this would help seal/prime the layers underneath and give you a fresh surface to work with. Any bog or filler can be built up over this layer.

5L Expoxy primer = $224
Epoxy hardener = $85

Then use 2 pack to paint (debeer products):
3L 2k surfacer = $117
1L Hardener = $85

2L 2k paint = $136
1L hardener = $51
1L thinner = $21

Total including epoxy primer = $763

As you can see there are pro's and cons for both methods.
The idea of the epoxy primer sounds good, and then I could choose either method of paint.
He said acrylic is an older method and 2 pack paints are a lot stronger and would be better if you plan on keeping the car for a long time.
One thing I didn't get any info on was the requirment for a clear coat?
As far a skill goes, I haven't painted a car before so I don't want to waste a lot of money on 2 pack paint if it is hard to use. Acrylic is easier but I don't want to have to spend hours buffing it to end up not getting the finish I'm after.

Surely a solid white isn't that hard to acheive?

Hey Tim,
I know it's hard to get right advice, but if the guy is terlling you to bog over epoxy, he should be in stand up comedy!  Have a look at the shine on my car which was achieved in a day of wet rubbing and then cut, I haven't even polished it yet!  I'm still waiting for a 2 pac job to look as good!  When you paint Acrylic you can afford the odd mistake and sand it out and touch it up, when you make a mistake with 2 pac, well it's nowhere as easy to touch up and fade.  All I'm saying is that I have had cars painted in acrylic and the paintwork when kept with a 6 monthly polish is still looking pretty in 20 years - But it's your call.  Just tell the guy from the paintshop that he must be related to Pinochio! (or whatever his name is!)

  Yep all those years ago when life was safe and we rode our 'pushy's' without helmets I used just a wee bit to much 2 pac!...I'm still findin easter eggs from last year!  Oh....and my kids often say "daddy, why do you glow in the dark!'
If you can wait till later tonite, I'll write down my system and hopefully Serpent John may chime in as he knows his 'stuff' and we'll see if we can't come up with some solutions for ya!

Just going back through some threads, didn't you use epoxy primer on your last car Rev?

And is there anything special to add when priming/painting a urethane spoiler?
