SOLD: Vitamin C Orange 1973 240Z For Sale
« on: March 20, 2010, 07:14:16 AM »
Hi all. Been a long time reader, but just recently joined and now first time posting. Have exhibited this car at the NSW Nationals in 2005 and my Dad’s 260Z 2+2 at Philip Island in 2007. I am sure some of the NSW guys who read this forum will know this car, and I welcome any independent opinions about my car from those that know it.

I have tried to include everything about the car for sale in the description below, but if you see anything in the photos that you want to know more about, please just post or call me.

Model: 1973 240Z

Location: Central Coast, NSW (1 hour north of Sydney)

Item Condition: Good

Body: Fibreglass bonnet and front guards. Rust in the usual places, including LHS door skin and around petrol filler door (will post photos); of course the front end is basically rust free because it is all fiberglass! There is a small crack in the driver’s side FG panel in the wheel arch (about 25mm long) and in the front spoiler as well – I clipped a gutter when doing a 3 point turn once! There are stone chips on the front spoiler and various other spots, and a scratch on the passengers side headlight panel (will post photos). The paintwork was done in 2003 by the PO. Colour is Vitamin C Orange (Hey Charger!). Originally it was surely Green 113, as there is still a paint code sticker under the bonnet.

Mechanical: Running very well – never been unreliable. Engine, head, SU’s, exhaust are all standard. It had 10k miles on the clock when I bought it. It currently has 29k miles on it.
I have receipts for all mechanical work - mostly done by Stewart Wilkins Rally – at the following odo readings:

New rear shocks @ 12k miles
New heater rooster valve@ 14k miles
Skyline/'79 280ZX gearbox 5 speed installed (1st 3.3 ; 2nd 2.0 ; 3rd 1.3 ; 4th 1.0 ; 5th 0.864) @ 16k miles
Diff R180 3.9 @ 16kmiles
New clutch, machined flywheel, new master & slave cylinders @ 16k miles
New timing chain and chain guides @ 16k miles
Welsh plugs (brass) @ 16k miles
Rear brakes overhauled,   drums machined @ 18k miles
New Wheels and Tyres:   BF Goodrich G-Force Sports 205/60R15 on 10-spoke Superlites @ 19k miles
2 new rear control arms and struts ; RHS wheel bearings replaced @ 20k miles
New engine exhaust @20k miles
Alternator overhauled-brushes, bearings replaced @25k miles
Rear LHS wheel bearing replaced @ 25k miles
New King Springs front and rear @27k miles
New rear Noltec bushes and rear camber adjustment kit @ 27k miles
Replaced front brake rotors and fitted new Ferrodo Formula disc pads @27k miles
New Noltec steering coupling @ 29k miles
Radiator tank soldered and flushed @ 29k miles
New Battery @ 29k miles

Work done by PO @ ~9k miles
Radiator recored
New handbrake cable
New windscreen
Seats retrimmed
Nolothane bushes (tie rods and sway bar)
New front shocks
New steering rack mounts
P700 headlights installed

Price and Payment Conditions: Offers over $15,000. I have to sell this car as my Dad’s selling me his concours winning 260Z 2+2 (that’s it in my Avatar) and I just can’t keep two Zeds in the garage. All reasonable offers will be considered. I have been a Zed tragic for many, many years and would love to see this car go to an enthusiast who’ll appreciate it, and perhaps take it to the next stage of its life. At this stage I haven’t put it up for sale anywhere else (ebay, carsales, carpoint etc…), as I’d like you guys get first look at it.

Registration: NSW registered until end of Nov 2010. Number Plates not for sale with car. Sorry. Personalised plates been in family for nearly 50 years!

Engineers Certificate: Not Applicable

Extra Info: I have had owned this 240Z since 2003. Back then it had 10k miles on the odometer, which could very well have only been it’s first time around the clock. I was an Auto when I bought it, and FWIW the PO told me he bought it from the original lady owner in Vic a few years earlier. I had it converted to manual by Stewart Wilkins in Sydney. The sunroof is most likely a dealer option fitted in 1973. The seals and drains work well on it and it doesn’t leak in the rain. I had dyno graphs done before and after its conversion from Auto to manual. It will come with the rear sun shade louvers as well. I also have the original bonnet torsion bars which I got off the PO, as I had thought to return the front end back to steel one day. There are also the original luggage straps, front bumper bar over riders, and taillight rear trim doors panels available separately that go with this car.

Does it still have the original engine?  Does it have matching numbers?

Hi Hammer,
It does not have a Nissan factory plate, only an Aussie compliance plate, which shows the chassis number to be correct. I asked the PO about this and he said it was never on the car when he got it resprayed. Perhaps he lost it or something, or was trying to hide the fact that the numbers didn't match - but even that seems a little bit ridiculous considering how many transplants that 240Z's have undergone over the years.

The chassis number is HS30 100921 and the engine number is L24 127640. Initially I was concerned about this lack of factory plate when I was looking at buying it back in 2003, but all the registers I can find put these numbers in the ballpark of being built together. I'm aware that Nissan did not necessarily put the L24's into the HS30's in any particular sequence, so I can't say for sure they are matching numbers - so the answer is "unknown". If you're looking for a concours winner, this is not the car for you, as it will never get past first base I'm afraid.

Let me know if you need any further info.  Cheers, Mark.

Vitamic C was a Valiant colour, correct me if I'm wrong.

Vals have the best names for colours though.
Hemi Orange (personal fav, as my Pacer was that colour)  ;D
Thar she blue
Bodi bleach
Little red riding hood

Absolutely correct about that. Hence my reference to Hey Charger! Although now if you want the colour of course you have to order it as Mitsubishi Vitamin C orange!

I love the look of that 2+2, was that the one at the Goulburn Nationals a few years ago? I seem to remember a name.... Toby? ..........a spectacular vehicle if it is the one I recall. A few pics of that 2+2 car would be very interesting to view just from an interest point of view. Lynton :P
Good luck with the sale of VitaminC
