Alternator change?
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:55:43 PM »
I've begun the 308 transplant into my C210 Coupe. Is there any reason I have to run the 308 alternator. Physically the L series( 280z) is the same size and it's still running all the same equipment but being spun by a different motor. Is this the correct way of looking at it? Ricky. I can make it fit.

It would be fine. As long as it lines up well with the pulley system and that it spins the right way and it should be cool. Just make sure that it is up to your requirements for current draw. If you aren't putting extra accessories on it should be fine.

In short, If you are running the Z loom then you should run the Z alternator.

There are two very seperate systems at play here, that being the charging system and the battery system.

The battery provides power to everything...that being said if the alternator goes down then the engine will still run for a while...just off the battery.

But once the battery is dead she will stop. So all you have to make sure of is that the alternator can keep up with the charge being drawn from the battery.

That is ensure the battery is provided with enough current to charge the battery in respect to the drain..ie head lights etc.

To my point.....if nothing else has changed (i.e: no spotlights or sub woofers) then the current (pardon the pun) alternator should do the trick.....if it physically fits.

A Six cyl to an eight cyl is not a big change...besides the spark works off voltage not amps.

Thanks for your submissions, and confirming what i thought might be possible. It may take a bit of working to mount it but at least I can still use my current wiring connections. Again thanks. Attached is a pic of car since painted

I changed my alternator to 140 amp Holden alternator. I mounted it up by drilling straight through the bracket and using a single bolt. Also i had to trim about 35mm off the front of the bracket to line it up into position. After that i drove it to the auto elec and they wired a resistor inline so the car would turn off. The first one i got was a dud but the second one is still there and going strong. It's an import alternator but Bosch parts will fit straight in it.

Hey Mark, I think you meant "diode" instead of "resistor". Just in case anyone else gets it confused!
