intercooler size, TB issue
« on: March 01, 2010, 10:30:35 AM »
hey all,

2 issues.

Issue the 1st

What size intercooler are the converters out ther getting?
L29ET is the end goal, started pulling it apart and ready for a new intercooler core.
I have read

http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,3624.15.html

and thought that was fantastic (Nuclear_z how did you get on wit that?)
I'll be using that style of piping and the 2.5" size as well

Is there a way to figure out what size of core one needs?  or when too big is too big and too small is too small?

Issue the 2nd:

I have a "gerry-rigged" throttle cable set up (yes cable) and have thus far not/been unable to source a solid linkage set.
New EFI manifold means new throttle body, which I assume is a different set of linkages.
Thinking im just going to run a custom cable, but herein lies the issue.

A cable pulls the butterfly open.  The 280zx standard butterfly needs to be pushed open    (wish i had a pic to put up)

Do I

a)  find a way of reversing the cable (puller wheel [see S15 throttle body]) and be happy with the 280zx TB?
or
b) buy a new throttle body that is more appropriate.  if b, what fits/what size/what make if i have to go aftermarket new.

I got bored over the xmas break and fitted an RB20DET TB to the standard 280ZX EFI manifold and linkage.  The RB20 TB I used measures 62mm diameter.  There was a bit of porting involved and I made a 1.2mm metal gasket between the two.

So the RB20 tb is now 'pushed' open by the existing linkage or did you convert to a cable 'pull' type??

The standard 3" thick 600 by 300 chinese intercoolers that are sold everywhere would do the trick for you mate unless you plan on making over 600hp. I bought one years ago for $200 for a 3L engine running 14psi and it worked fine.

only just.

I have a 600 wide in mine.
I had to weld 90 degree tight radius bends directly to the tanks (cut in slightly) to get the pipes to line up with the factory holes in the radiator support for the cabin vents.
