I spoke to Lurch about this at the BBQ at Gordon's place.

Gav, is it possible for users to choose their theme in the user preferences (like some other forum systems).

Yes it is possible, but for the sake of simplicity I'd rather keep it to 1 theme. I'm going to go with a relative width, so it will adjust based on screen size. The problem with wide forum layouts is that large chunks of text become difficult to read due to the very long lines of text. For readability its best to have 12-16 words per line.

Also since I've been given a Nexus One Phone and I use it to check the site frequently I noticed that having a fixed width layout is a bit of a pain.

What's the main reason people want the wider ratio? Is it so large images fit? I'm just trying to keep consistency in site navigation and feel throughout all pages of the site.

So I've updated the layout to be consistent with the rest of the website. Its slightly wider than before and should expand wider for widescreen users.

Are you guys who wanted the wider format happy with it?

Also I haven't extensively tested to make sure the layout is ok in all browsers. So if you have any display issues, please let me know.

You can either send a screenshot or tell me what Web Browser you are using. Will test IE7 when I get home.

Hope you like the new look and feel.

Now that you have narrowed it done it actually looks cramped. the wider was much easier to read in my op

I've actually made it slightly wider again because it was too narrow on my home laptop (I was making adjustments at work on a widescreen).

well the latest changes make it hard to read when you click on the "Show unread posts since last visit" which I use all the time :( by latest I mean whatever happened overnight with the theme change - it was ok the other day when nice and wide and after the first upgrade/change.

I like the new design and the new layout is perfect for me :)

I used to use the new posts/threads thing as well, the one that just listed the threads in order of the most recent post. Other than that it's looking great :)

I noticed hybrid z is upgrading their software too...
