I agree with Rev. Sorry for the guys with the dosh. Some/most of us are not that fortunate.

Thats what i miss in the old car magizines.  Cars that owners build and spilled blood over. Not some Marketing exercise done by a workshop and some rich kid buying it afterwards.  ::)

To me half the fun owning a car u like is to work on it and improve to your liking.

Very few of those "owner built" magazine cars are actually built by the owners, sure they had a hand in some of the work and helped position the engine while hoisting it in, probably even helped push it into the spray booth, but to finish cars to those standards takes a pro, and a pro takes cash...some accept card.

I'm not rich, in fact that's why I'm selling some of my cars at the moment is to finance finishing the others, just coz I'd rather pay someone to do it right doesn't mean I love or enjoy my cars any less.

I hear what you're saying, don't get me wrong when I talk about the DIY guys, I'm just saying it's a great way to mix it up and there are guys like me who have done most of the work by ourselves with help and/or advice by other guys on the forums.  it helps to inspire and encourage guys to keep going, to achieve their goals and realize that it is possible to get their 'project' to a stage that is not only drivable but appreciated by others.

I am really bad at doing things to my car myself.  Very few things have turned out right when doing them myself, therefore, I pay someone to do it properly.  I work hard for my money and since most of it goes to my zed anyway, whats the difference?

I know you didn't say it to offend anyone Rev, but some people will be offended by it.  I have a lot of admiration for someone with the time and know how to do it, but i'm not one of those people, I like not having to deal with it and being able to still enjoy driving my car is what its about for me.

Anyways, back on topic, I like Revs idea, lets get a totally restored by owner zed on here :D

Let me put it right up front, the last thing I would ever want to do on this forum is to upset anyone, I understand completely the need for work to be carried out by others, my comment was to attempt to have the forum find a balance.  Again if I have upset anyone, I apologise :-[

This thread is starting to remind me of that episode of Home Improvements when Tim went up against the other DIY guy in their hot rods.  Of course, Tim's was built by himself and the kids and the other guys by a shop.  Funny episode that one.

Cheers,

Matt

Well I think I missed the point of what Rev said, I'm going to be someone that pays for the work on their car.

I still think its a good idea and I hope to one day have the workspace/time to do it myself  :)

Hey guys,
I can relate to what you say about feature cars being built by owners. I am happy to feature any car (really!), my biggest hurdle has been getting information from owners. I try contact people who I think have nice cars or I think our community would like to read about.

However I often need photos and some details on the car (so I can put the nice little table of specs together). Many owners are enthusiastic but either get busy or don't get back to me for a month or two. I understand this, no problems. I'm busy too, so I only put these together once a month or once every two months as that's when I find the time.

I have contacted Dimitri (Zedman240) who has done a load of the work himself and just finished his RB25 conversion. I'm looking forward to putting it together.

As I say I'm happy to feature any car (as long as its related or our members find it interesting) - sorry George I don't think our members would be that enthusiastic about a Mazda 323 :).

I would definitely like to feature more Australian Zeds - since it is an Aussie Z site. Its just that the US has so MANY nice Zeds to feature also :).

Hey Gavin, I sat down last night and typed up a brief description, downloaded and filled out the form, and realised I didn't have any decent pics of my car other than the engine bay or when it was loaded on the tilt tray! This afternoon I'll find a nice place and take some pics of the zed and email it all to you tonight. Thanks for giving me the opportunity!

LOL  ;D  few people missed the point but anyways i dont think Rev or myself were trying to tick anyone off.

All i can say that for "backyarders" (hate that term)  like Rev and myself and quite a few members out here are fairly proud of the work we do and im sure we will put lot of so called "proffesionals" to shame.  :P

but i guess ill just drop it now   :P

Sorry if someone got crossed wasnt intentional.  :-[

now to the cars. BRING THEM ON MORE Z PLEASE!

Gav,
What about a feature including info on how to's, with plenty of pics...I'd be happy to oblige with what's been done to mine and can include the new one I'm doing which is 90% there...just a thought, check out my webpage build to get an idea of what I mean.
