peter mc Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 some pics off a motor i have started today , will be off to the US , for a 240z racer ALL he wants is the best L NA in the world , but it has to have carbs and a distributor , spec 90mm x 90mm bore and stroke custom light billet crank fcw custom Honda Carrillo rods super A beam 400gr forged custom piston 10.9 comp custom one off head with new valve position for inlet and exhaust 48mm valve inlet and 35ex with water mods internal and external billet , 50mm solex carbs on jap bigport man will be many custom parts and heaps off love day one find a block that will go 90 +mm in the bore , never easy with a F54 , after sonic testing 5 blocks i found 1 , and it was filthy lol not for to long , it went in to the bath and we bored it to 88mm and re sonic tested it to be shore it was still right for the job , then i started the task off cleaning all the casting dags from it inside and out , It will be painted inside like all my race motors , and will be grout filled to the top off the welsh plugs , i will post pics as i go hope you guys like the build PS hope you dig the 50mm solex carbs man there cool Quote
NZeder Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 F54 are not usually recommended for anything bigger than 88mm so finding one that can go to 90mm is outstanding Quote
zedevan Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Very nice, does there have to be any consideration for lower octane American petrol, or is that all a lie people tell themselves so we don't feel as bad for paying so much for petrol here? Quote
Xnke Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Some parts of the US have lower grade fuel, but where I live, 93 octane fuel is roughly equal to your 98 octane...different ways of measuring. A little way down the road, next town over has pump 95, which would come out as 100 octane in the Southland! Not so cheap, though. Quote
peter mc Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Just to be shore after i tune it hear on our dyno , and have a proper setup and hp and torque i will be flying over with the engine and i will put it on a dyno over there in LA then i will have a drive at Laguna Seca , will be great to end all the HP over there to hear crap that goes on , Quote

Sounds like it will be a great experience Pete - you don't get opportunities to drives those circuits everyday! Quote
Xnke Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Sounds like an awesome trip, Peter! Laguna Seca is a nice looking course...but take note that California has oxygenated 91 octane...might as well fill the tank with scummy pond water. Tuning is going to be MUCH different, so if you're going to tune the car in Oz, then ship it to the US, it'll have to be re-tuned when it gets here for the fuel he gets to use...although if he's running race fuel it won't be a problem. While you're in LA, look up Jeff Priddy and his 280ZX. He's the one street-driving the 650HP L28ET I mentioned in another thread, as well as Power By Gerolomy, who no longer does L-series headwork...they used to do some of the best L-heads in the states. Jeff's head was the last one Nathan did. Slover's Porting Service still does L-series heads, and I *think* they are in the area as well. (Trying to think of all the L-engine nifty things in the LA area...) Quote
peter mc Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 It will be tuned hear on 95 fuel and will be run on better race fuel over there Quote
Roberto Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 This sounds like a great thing! Make sure to take plenty of video footage. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted May 24, 2013 Moderators Posted May 24, 2013 Pete Looking forward to reading more about this build. The best NA L in the world will be something to follow. Cheers PB Quote
peter mc Posted May 24, 2013 Author Posted May 24, 2013 Yes its a big claim to have the best , to have the best it will need to have a build quality not seen hear before , but we have made a decision to go all out with this build , the pasion we all have for this project has made it happen , greg wants the best and biggest, and must have more hp than all his race engines he has had . Greg has had a zed shop in the US for 25 years so he knows a thing or two about the L motor So we want to see a 380hp NA L single cam that looks like a show motor , Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted May 24, 2013 Administrators Posted May 24, 2013 Pete you do amazing work, would love to get you to build an L-series for my Z. I'm scared I'll need to take out a mortgage though! Looking forward to seeing what you do with this 1. Quote
Xnke Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 This engine destined for Greg Ira? He's a VERY competent driver and chassis guy too...runs very near, if not on the top, of his class in SCCA ITS. Will be a GREAT day when it's in the car and making laps! Quote
peter mc Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 Sorry not Greg ira . Must be a lot off gregs into zeds . Quote
dat240z Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Hey Pete, always been an injected rb 240z man myself, but find all your builds very interesting. Ive always said if I get another Z, itll be built to Jap specs with an angry N/A L series. Ball park figures for you to build a mild quick L engine? Nothing like this thread, Im assuming this engine will cost him $30k+...... But for a normal L series you build, what 10K??? Quote
Zedric Posted May 30, 2013 Posted May 30, 2013 Very nice, does there have to be any consideration for lower octane American petrol, or is that all a lie people tell themselves so we don't feel as bad for paying so much for petrol here? From what I can remember from along time ago is there are 2 different octane numbers, 'RON' (research octane number) and 'MON' (motor octane number) which have a 10 point difference. And if that wasn't enough to confuse us some countries use a number that's an average of both? I think that's what our octane rating is but I can't remember. Pete obviously knows what he is doing and I hope we get to see and hear this magnificent piece of engineering. Can you imagine the sound of triple 50mm Solex carbs on this beast at full song? Quote
peter mc Posted June 6, 2013 Author Posted June 6, 2013 hear is some pics off the new stroker crank getting made , and it going thru heat treatment to destress it before it gets finished Quote
260DET Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I better start following this build, it's more than just plain interesting Quote
peter mc Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Thanks for the intrest , things have stepped up on this build , Les has made a new head for it and we are at a new hp level that we never thought we would see , but because off this now we need to rethink many things like pipes and valve weight and valve springs , and camshaft , we hope to see 116hp per L from 3.4 at 8000 Quote
luvemfast Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 That's nearly 400hp Better take it to 8,200 then Quote
