Cabin Heat & Fumes

Hi All,

hope your having a relaxing Australia day polishing your Z's......hehhehe.

Anyhow I just wanted to ask if anyone has made a decent attemp at reducing the cabin heat that seems to come from the tranny tunnel in the Z's.

Also, at the start I didn't think the fumes were that bad. But I know realise that after I go for a drive my clothes reak of V-max shell power  :lol: . I guess it's all flowing in from the passenger side as the carbs are on that side.



I've had a good look at the firewall and there doesn't seem to be any big holes that would let the fumes come in. I'm thinking it might be come'n from the shift boot as that's not sealed and is right on top of tranny tunnel where all the air/fumes flow.

Just thinking of ways to make the drive a tad more pleasant. Sorry if all you guys are use to it .......heheheh.

there should b a rubber seal underneath the shift boot, if you dont have one it helps reduce the smell, and the noise alot, you can get them off ebay america

the heat coming through the trans tunnel i havn't really noticed, however it is hot to touch, i guess you could put on any type of heat sheild but if ur trying to make ur car light i assume u have to choose!

the smell is generally thought to be coming through the rear lights and hatch seals, there's a long thread on it at hyridz. i've been considering buying http://www.airtab.com/ and putting them at the top of the hatch, either just before it or on the top of the windows so they are easy to pull off, and hope that it disrupts the air up there and makes it flow off the back of the car better, although might just hope they are doing that as part of their wind tunnel testing and see the results first, however it's not like they are that expensive.  ppl on hybridz have been suggesting it as in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmVdufi3Bmo you can see the "air" seperating from the body starting up there, so if this delays it then it should dely the turbulance.  the other option is the rear spoiler which i'm planning to get at some stage, and in which case i guess the airtabs would put more air over the spoiler like what they are used for on the evo's

The fume problem is common due to the "aerodynamics" of the car. Check rear tail light gaskets but checking that rubber shift boot is a must. Also check the seal on the hatch and check to see the hatch has the two rubber gromets on the underside, (if they are missing it makes a huge difference, I know because I did'nt put them in straight after I sprayed my car and man was it bad!). Also you can go for the JDM look with the twin pipes sticking out one on top of each other in a vertical position, (that look really has grown on me over the years). Or you can install a dump pipe like I did and it helped. The aim of the latter and the potruding pipes is to get the exhaust fumes as far away from the rear of the car as possible.

Omg is that what my friend meant when he said the Z's have bad aero........hahha kinda funny actually. I guess i was looking in the wrong place. I did think to myself - that the engine bay was super clean with no leaks at all so how could these fumes come about? And at some stages when i smelt it, it did smell like exhaust fumes  :lol: .

Definitely need a new rear boot seal - the one that is pressed to the body boot edge, mines rotten.

this is gunna sound realy dodgy but i duck taped a piece of builders foam to the back hatch and it preaty much solved my probs wif fumes any way

where abouts on the hatch?

I tried a closing the hatch with a thick towel along the lower side and it didn't do anything. Is it flowing in from the top of the hatch as well?

I whacked a small original spoiler on the back of my car and instantly the fume disappered.
Try that, worked a treat for me.

If you  look closely you can see the rear black spoiler.

Regarding the heat from the tranny tunnel, maybe some heat shielding above the exhaust might help? I've noticed later model cars use heat sheilding extensively.

Just thought I'd let everyone know.......

Since I put on the front spoiler the fumes don't seem to be anywhere near as strong as before after a thrash.......I'd dare say non at all.

it looks sexy but i dont understand the theory behind how a front spoiler would really help, lol, if that helps mayb u should check for any ungromited holes in the firewall?

the problem is caused by airflow at the back of the car........

so putting the front spoiler on changes the way the airflows to the back and i guess that's helped heaps.

hehehhehe I haven't noticed it.......but their dam nice cars.
