speedo cog/sleeve nightmare 4.11
Pedro:
ok, i am in a bit of a mare. 1/2 a day gone.
took out speedo cog sleeve out of gearbox to put in red speedo cog on that sleeve ( coinciding with my new 4.11 diff).
I used the gearbox's sleeve (260z) with the red cog as per instructions.
it wont go in. i have wriggled driveshaft, etc, the closest i can get it to properly in is when the seal on the sleeve meets the casing of the gearbox (1cm short).
i dont know what to do on this one.
any help would be much appreciated.
Scoota G:
Sounds like the cog is not on all the way! Can you slide it out and post up a picture of the offending item?
dat2kman:
Did you replace the plastic gear on the little dooverlackey that you push into the hole on the gearbox?
Or,
Just put a whole new dooverlackey in in place of the old one?
Check that it rotates easilly, it has small thrust washer down in its inside, without the tiny washer it can bind in bottom of housing.
Other thing, the cogs on these are not centred with the housing, you may need to rotate the housing, as you gently push it into the box.
To check it is rotating, before you screw on the speedo drive cable, rotate the tailshaft, and check the little round shafty thing with the slit in it is rotating.
Then use the bolt with little tab plate to hold it in.
If the groove in the dooverthingy doesnt line up with the lock tab, mark it a bit, pull it out, and use a thin edge file to make a new groove for the lock tab.
Pedro:
ok. the rotating thing certinaly came into play -
was just stressing as it was getting dark and car was on ramps
its in though - thanks for the fast response dat2k, and scoota, unfortunately no time for photos.
For all you rookies out there (myself included) i learnt some things
- once the rubber ring on the sleeve is in line with the bellhousing the gears HAVE half meshed. i found that given the rubber ring was now pushing on the metal of the inside of the bellhousing that its a bit stiffer to force in. I was very scared of hitting it, as i didnt wasnt to bind gears (smash them) but with a fairly decent hand shove the last 7mm or so went in. But only once the ring is on the inside of the bellhousing - just.
- Make sure you put the back wheels of the car on ramps - i lost zero gearbox oil as a result. If on front ramps, chances are you will lose oil.
- I used the redcog/sleeve from the donour which i thought was either a DR31/30 (4.11). The red cog didnt work in the normal fasion with the 260z sleeve, in that the 260z sleeve with the 4.11 red cog would only fit at 180 degrees from the sleeves tab which holds it in place with a bolt. The oval shape was precisely inverted to the 260z (wording?).
- its a bit of a frig without pits.

this is where i sort of worked out why it would only go in upside down (the 260z sleeve that is)
Gareth. J.:
I remember having the same problem.... Laying under the car thinking WTF :D As Jason said, I just put the whole new speedo cog/body into the gearbox and marked where groove needed to be, then cut the groove and installed.
