Have any of you guys used this? and would you know where to get it?
the guys at zcar.com claim it does wonders for a dodgy gearbox.

cheers,
Luke

I've heard Redline is pretty good... I'd imagine you should be able to find it at Repco or Bursons, or if you had to at Autobarn.  In reality though any high quality synthetic gearbox oil will probably do the job, unless your box is really stuffed.... Castrol Syntrans for example is pretty good.

Or double clutch more :P

hahahha, my double clutching skills aren't quite up to scratch....slow shifts seem to be the safest way to go

autobarn doesn't have it nor does burson or east coast auto spares (bentleigh)....i might give repco a call just to check but otherwise i'll just go with Castrol....cheers

redline is american brand, as far as im aware off, and im sure you might be able to get it at some reputable performance workshops, at a excessive amount of money, but as zedpophile pointed out, its just the same synthtic stuff...

in my experiances changing the gearbox oil on a stuffed box will only minorly fix the problem.... save the cash from the oil and fix the box

Hi

I agree good oil won't fix the problem. But if you want to buy Redline, according to the Australian web site, all Burson outlets stock it

mmmm, i checked bursons but none seem to have it, i'll just try other synth until i get it rebuilt....

incidently, how much does it cost to get a 5 speed rebuilt? (i know this is a vague question, just after a ball park figure) the syncros are bad, but it holds gear fine

thanks again

The redline shockproof gear oil is supposed to be the bees knees but its not a silver bullet. If your tranny is knackered then its knackered. The redline stuff wasn't enough to save my FS5C71A from destruction unfortunately. That being said I'll still be using it.

No idea on tranny rebuild prices sorry. I suggest you ring around. Good luck.

as far as rebuild prices go, thats a widely variable question, and it depends what extent you want to go to.  Generally when you strip and rebuild a box, you have no idea what its going to require until its in pieces.  It may just need synchros, or it could be that you also have excessively worn mainshafts, bearings and clusters, and you'll only find out when its apart.

If you opt for Nissan genuine bearings etc, it may cost quite a lot.  Some places will do a changeover box (Ie. one thats already rebuilt in exchange for your box) for a set price.....  Personally, I think a cheaper option may well be to buy a secondhand gearbox.  You can collect RB25 boxes for around $550, but of course you then need a bellhousing to suit, and may need to do a little cutting of the trans tunnel - not sure about how the splines line up.

But anyway, 3 options really (Well, 4):
- Get your current box rebuilt.
- Go for a changeover box, might be hard to find for a 260/280.
- Go secondhand (Probably cheapest, of course risk is if you can't drive it in car first in a private sale...  most wreckers should supply some kind of warranty.)

- Or, practise those double clutches! I can give some hints if you want, its not hard at all, and its pretty satisfying to get it right, even with stuffed synchros the gears will just fall in - in fact, its easier to learn on a stuffed box, cause you know when you've done it right!
