Legacy Machine Build!
« on: January 04, 2012, 08:25:53 PM »
A long time coming but here is a few photos of the Legacy Machine or affectionately known as "Blue Steel" from humble beginnings to now. Pictures say a thousand words so I wont crap on about it. If you have an I-phone and you dont know you can download the  Targa app and see results from Targa High Country. Thanks to AUSZCAR forum and all of the members for their support. It took 7 Months!!

Wow 7month turn around and looks fantastic. What are the specs on the motor, driveline, suspension? The cage work looks very substantial.
Is that a custom diff mount with a control arm bush? Cheers, Gareth

I watched the Targa Tas dvd yesterday and saw a similar looking Z go into a ditch, then almost get hit by an out of shape Lambo  :o

Gareth - Yes that was this car, no damage - just long grass that I could have been pushed out of but my navigator has no legs - lucky it was a driver fault so I couldnt curse him;)

Tasy was just a learning experience for us and with the new engine with 55HP extra in prior to High Country we found ourselves competitive all of a sudden.

The L28 was built by our engine sponsor  - more of a combined effort with alot of internals coming from Stew Wilkinson and he did the head as well. Running some 45mm OER's and a new set of the Yodas Ceramic headers that will set you back 1K - pretty sexual looking things though! and a nice flange free exhaust by Jimmy at Liverpool exhaust who always helps us out

Its a very strong cage and good side bars as you can see, no chance of the front end flapping off either.

All of the  Custom stuff like the Diff mount was designed by the Yoda, fortunately we have a workshop where we can make it ourselves to cut costs.
R32 gearbox and R200 LSD, king springs and koni adjustables.

Glad to hear there was no damage, sounded really good while you were giving it the beans trying to reverse out  :D

I'm liking the diff mount, looks really well thought out an easy for maintenance/replacement!

Thanks John

Hopefully I get some interest and I will update regularly - depends on what people want to see I guess.

Would be great if everyone who reads this thread became fans of the car on its facebook page - nearly up to 200, would like to think i could get a thousand off here...

Looks nice. To get oil pressure after installing engine do you just pull the plugs and crank the starter? Does the oil go everywhere with the rocker cover off? Also do you need to squirt oil/fuel in the cylinders through the plug holes if the engine is new/has not run for a while. My engine has sat for years and I am wondering what I need to do before firing it up. Cheers. :)

There are many ways, and let me say I am no mechanic and usually am an assisting bystander.

Plugs out for sure and fuel off so you arent dumping fuel in the bore.
A towel helps and if you have poured that much oil and cranked it for that long that oil starts spilling out of head then you prob need to look at a different way to get oil pressure. You are just trying to keep lobes and lash pads lubed and hope the vas in the oil pump does the job.

There is the disy off and dissy shaft method until you get oil to flow from "all" Cam oil galleries.

There would be alot of gurus on here that could help - I know pretty much zero compared to most on here about these things.

That there is a big dollar motor - and anxiuos times when watching that process - if I had a clunker I might give it a crack myself...maybe

A set of 260z Hood Vents arrived today. Should do the job in the Carbon Fibre Bonnet when made.

Last Rally I had a massive heat soak issue with the new engine and higher temps than Tasy.

I have since also installed some heat shields to each Carb that you may be able to see in one of the last photos and a few other mods to come.

For about 1Km at the start of every Targa Stage it would run like a mule until cool air had flushed through the engine Bay, didnt help the cause obviously!
I am running a continuous flow like an EFI system from tank through fuel rail and back at 3 PSI so always nice cool fuel.
