Most others use an aftermarket tach, no probs thete, cant see why it wouldnt work with the stock tach

Btw i have a brand new msd6al2 in box, with all the stuff they come with, for sale, bought it for a car, but found i already had a adjustable electronic ignition unit and higjer energy coil that came with it

I run the 6AL-2 and it worked without the adaptor on my autometer tach and also on my rebuilt 10,000rpm Datsun tach, should be fine.

How much you want for it Jason?
Think I should fit one, more so for the rev limiter.

Stock tachometer will not work with the tach output from a 6AL or any other CDI. you can get an MSD tach adaptor or you can build one if you google tach adaptor 240z. It converts the stock tach from inductive loop to active low type. Pm me if you need the schematics. I even have bought the parts for a few if enough people are interested in it.

That doesn't apply to the '75.

260z tach will work I've used one on my car with the 6AL-2, worked fine. 240z tachs have the inductive loop.

Get one Simon, the rev limiter is very good. I've buzzed mine a few times at 7200  :D

I got a series 2 260z tach and pulled it apart because I thought the same thing and it's definitely still and inductive loop.

I also used to have a 78 260z which I did the 280zx dizy upgrade an it still worked which is weird.

Have you connected up the tacho to the tacho output from the MSD or just left it on the ignition? From what I have read about CDI ignitions the high currents they operate at will burn out the tacho electronics if left connected up with the loop.

I just bought an autometer tacho because of this.

Can anyone with a series 2 260z tacho handy have a look at the back of it and see if there is a wire looped on the back?

so i take it everyone is using these for the timing tuning ability, not just bigger spark? what dizzys are you using and how are you locking them out?
76 260z 2+2 - L28 + Auto - My new baby, going to get it looking sweet and cruise it good.
81 MQ Patrol - Turbo diesel is out, VN V8 going in, plus lockers and all the other goodies.
91 VN Commodore - 5L V8 + 10psi charger = 360rwhp + good times.

I'm using one (MSD-6AL) for the bigger spark only. The limiting is unused (ECU driven). Dizzy is L turbo (was custom locked up, hall effect).

I'm using my 6AL-2 for the bigger spark and the in built rev limiter, there's also a launch control function but I haven't connected that. I trigger it with a rebuilt scorcher dizzy (magnetic pickup).

The tach I first used was from a 77 260 2+2 gap import and only had a brass bullet terminal for the coil trigger wire, this is the same tach I rebuilt to suit 10,000rpm and now runs straight to the msd tach (grey). If you connect anything to the coil it will be fried by the higher voltage the msd uses.

True story - only use the tacho output feed. I had my 240Z tacho modified with solid-state internals to suit the square-wave MSD output. I also have an MR30 tacho that I modified too - and that was already negative trigger, but didn't work properly with the MSD output
